The North Country boys and girls basketball teams both picked up two wins this past week, defeating Frazer and Dodson. The boys beat Frazer 87-37 Jan. 24 and defeated Dodson 54-50 Jan. 25. The girls team downed Frazer 83-23 and won 56-12 over Dodson.
Boys
The Mavericks led 18-12 over Frazer at the end of the first quarter and went on a 25-13 run in the second for a 43-25 lead at the half. North Country outscored the Bearcubs 28-8 in the third and 16-4 in the fourth for the 87-37 victory.
Blaine Downing poured in 30 as Coy Bowman added 22 points. Laytin Erickson scored 10 followed by Chase Albus and Kade Strommen with 8 each. Sam Simonson hit for 5 and Jake Brown scored 4 points.
The Mavericks beat the Coyotes 54-50 powered by a 14-5 first quarter showing. Dodson outpaced North Country 15-11 in the second quarter while both teams put up 14 in the third. The Coyotes outpaced the Mavericks by a single point, 16-15, in the final 8 minutes as North Country held on for the win.
Strommen led all scorers with 17 points while Erickson and Bowman added 10 each. Downing scored 8, Brown 6 and Albus 3 points.
Girls
North Country's girls team established dominance in the first quarter with a 33-2 showing. They increased their lead to 57-7 at the half and outscored Frazer 22-4 in the third quarter. The Mavericks close out the game with a 12-4 run for the 83-23 win.
Shelbi LaBrie led all scorers with 23 followed by BaiLee McColly with 17 points. Kodi McColly scored 10 as CharLee McColly added 9 and Gracie Wasson 7 to the score sheet. Emerson Downing scored 6 and Berkley Hillman 5 while Jersey Salle-Cornwell, Ainsley Erickson and Kennedy Simonson added 2 points a piece.
The Mavericks put Dodson away in the first half with a 25-4 first quarter and a 17-0 second quarter. North Country outscored the Coyotes 8-3 in the third and 6-5 in the fourth for the 56-12 victory.
LaBrie again led all scorers with 18 while B. McColly scored 10 points. Downing and K. McColly each scored 7 while Reese Bowman added 6 points. Simonson scored 4 as C. McColly and Hillman both put up 2 points.
North Country is scheduled to host the Circle Wildcats Friday, Jan. 31, in Hinsdale with games at 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m. They then travel to Turner Saturday, Feb. 1, to play the Tornadoes at 5 and 6:30 p.m.
