Ice Dawgs Battle Generals

The Glasgow Ice Dawgs split their home games against the Miles City Generals this past weekend to improve the Dawgs' record to 9-2. Glasgow lost 5-4 against Miles City Jan. 25 in a hard-fought loss but returned to the ice the following morning to claim a 3-2 victory over the top team in the Big Sky High School league. Glasgow now sits in third behind Miles City, 13-3, and Butte, 11-2.

Penalties cost Glasgow in the first game against Miles City as the Generals made good on two man-advantages in the second period to secure the win.

The Dawgs started the scoring, going up 3-1 in the first period. Elijah Howland struck 1:21 into the game with an assist from Dillon Hughes. The Generals answered just over two-and-a-half minutes later. Brody Hansen made it 2-1, assist Charlie Cornwell, with 5:52 remaining in the period. Tavin Boland gave the Dawgs a two-goal advantage with 1:56 left on the clock and help from Aiden Price and Cornwell.

Miles City scored 2:15 into the second and 4:45 in to tie the game. The Generals took the lead just over three minutes later with Howland in the penalty box for hooking. Hansen tied the game for Glasgow with help from Cornwell with 8:29 to play before the intermission. Miles City converted on another man-advantage less than a minute later. The Generals scored the game-winning goal with Hughes in the box for elbowing.

Neither team scored in the third period as Kolten Hansen turned away nine attempts on his net in the final 17 minutes. Glasgow outshot Miles City 37-35 over the course of the game. Goaltender Hansen had a 0.857 save percentage in the loss.

All five penalties in the game were against the Dawgs. Jack Miller sat for roughing in the first. Howland and Hughes took shortened breaks in the second period for hooking and elbowing, respectively. Cornwell and Hughes each received a roughing call in the third period.

Glasgow took far more penalties in game two but worked it to their advantage with a short-handed goal in the third period while they gave up no power play goals to the visitors.

Boland got the game going with help from Miller with 5:51 to play in the first. Miles City tied it up just under three minutes later. Neither team lit the lamp in the second period.

Cornwell put the Dawgs back up on top less than a minute into the third, hitting the short-handed goal with Boland serving out the remainder of his second-period interference call. The Generals tied the game at 2-2 a minute and 14 seconds later. B. Hansen put the puck in the net to win the game with 6:03 remaining on the clock. Howland and Cornwell earned the assists.

The Dawgs racked up the penalty minutes with eight calls against them, including two 2-and-10s. Miles City served time for four infractions. Hunter was sent to the box twice in the first period, once for tripping and once for interference. Boland was called for hooking and interference in the second while Tristan Powell took a 2-and-10 call for boarding. Price drew a 2-and-10 for head contact in the third while Cornwell and Tristan Powell each served a tripping call.

Jacob Potter put up a 0.955 save percentage, turning away 42 of 44 attempts on his net. The Ice Dawgs offense put 43 pucks on the Generals netminder.

Glasgow will host their last home games of the season this weekend with Missoula in town. The Ice Dawgs will play the Bruins at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday Feb. 1, and again at 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 2. The Saturday evening game will be Senior Night honoring six graduating Ice Dawgs: Dillon Hughes, Tristan Powell, Kolten Hansen, Aiden Price, Josh Llewellyn and Mason Hunter.
