The North Country girls basketball team improved to 6-0, 11-0 overall with a 62-26 win over Lustre and a 60-16 win over Nashua last week. The Maverick boys lost 51-22 to Lustre in Saco Jan. 17 but responded with a 60-26 win over the Porcupines the following night on the road. The boys team is now 3-3, 8-3 overall.
Girls
The Mavericks cruised to a 17-6 lead in the first over the Lions and led 28-17 at the half. North Country outpaced Lustre 21-3 in the third quarter and secured the 62-26 win with a 13-6 run in the final 8 minutes.
BaiLee McColly led all scorers with 20 points followed by Shelbi LaBrie who put 19 in the book. Kennedy Simonson scored 8 while Gracie Wasson added 5 and CharLee McColly 4 points. Ainsley Erickson and Emerson Downing both scored 2 points.
North Country also took early control of their game in Nashua, going on a 22-2 run in the first 8 minutes. The Mavericks scored 14 in the second for a 36-9 lead at the half. They put up 15 in the third and 9 in the fourth while holding Nashua to 5 and 2 points in the same quarters for the 60-16 victory.
B. McColly led all scorers with 21 points. Kodi McColly followed with 8 while LaBrie and C. McColly added 6 each. Lyli Bear scored 5 as Reese Bowman and Berkley Hillman added 3 points a piece. Downing and Jersey Cornwell scored 2 each and Simonson hit a free throw.
Boys
North Country found themselves down by 18 after getting shut out in the first quarter against the Lions Jan. 17. The Mavericks responded with 7 in the second but trailed 29-7 at the half. They held tight in the third, getting outscored 12-11, but the Lions went on a 10-4 run in the fourth for the 51-22 win over the Mavericks.
Laytin Erickson led North Country with 7 followed by Blaine Downing with 5 points. Jake Brown hit for 4 as Coy Bowman and Sam Simonsen scored 2 each.
North Country held a 3-point lead in Nashua after one the following night but went on a 15-2 run in the second for a 24-8 lead heading into the second half. The Mavericks outscored the Porcupines 19-7 in the third and 17-11 in the final 8 minutes for the 60-26 victory.
Downing led all scorers with 29 points. Erickson added 17 and Kade Strommen connected for 10 points. Jaydeen Hanshew, Simonson and Chase Albus scored 2 points a piece.
North Country hosts the Frazer Bearcubs Friday, Jan. 24, in Hinsdale with games scheduled for 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m. The Mavericks play the Coyotes in Dodson Saturday, Jan. 25, at 4 and 5:30 p.m.
