North Country Girls Win Two; Boys Split Games

The North Country girls held their number one slot in District 3C with wins over Circle and Turner this past week. The Mavericks are 3-0, 8-0 overall, with a 47-40 win over Circle Jan. 3 and a 42-24 victory over Turner the following day.

The North Country boys fell 52-42 to Circle but beat Turner 57-51. The Mavericks are third in 3C with a 2-1, 7-1 overall record.

Girls

The Mavericks established their lead in the first quarter in Circle with a 15-8 lead after one. The Wildcats fought back in the second with 12 points giving North Country a 21-20 lead at the half. North Country was outscored 16-10 in the third but went on a 16-5 run in the fourth for the 47-41 win.

Shelbi LaBrie paced the Mavericks with 14 points. Emerson Downing scored 11 and BaiLee McColly 10 points. CharLee McColly and Gracie Wasson both added 5 as Kennedy Simonson scored 2 points.

The Mavericks went up 11-4 after one over Turner and led 18-7 after two quarters. They outpaced the Tornadoes by a single point, 8-7, in the third while Turner went on a 10-6 run in the fourth as North Country won 42-24.

Downing led North Country with 11 as LaBrie scored 10 points. B. McColly hit for 8 and Kodi McColly added 5 points. Lyli Bear, Berkley Hillman, Simonson and Wasson all put 2 points in the score book.

Boys

The boys loss to Circle came after a slow first quarter where they trailed 17-7. They were outpaced 13-11 in the second for a 30-18 Wildcats lead at the half. North Country put up 13 to Circle’s 12 in the third and another 12 in the final 8 minutes as the Wildcats scored 10 but the Mavericks still trailed 52-43 at the final buzzer.

Blaine Downing led North Country with 21 points. Laytin Erickson hit for 8 and Jake Brown added 6 points. Coy Bowman and Chase Albus scored 4 each.

The Mavericks responded with a win over Turner the following night. North Country took a 16-9 lead after one and went on a 14-5 run in the second for a 30-14 halftime lead. Turner fought back with 16 in the third while holding North Country to 6 points while both teams put up 21 in the final 8 minutes for the 57-51 Mavericks victory.

Erickson led North Country with 19. Downing added 14 and Bowman scored 13 points. Brown connected for 9 and Albus hit a bucket.

The North Country gils will play the Malta C team Thursday, Jan. 9 at 5 p.m.

The Mavericks travel to Scobey Saturday, Jan. 11, to play the Spartans with games at 2:30, 4 and 5:30 p.m.
