Lustre Christian Boys Beat Manhattan, Manhattan Christian

Lions Girls Split Games

The Lustre Christian Lions basketball teams traveled across the state to take on the Manhattan Tigers Dec. 13 and the Manhattan Christian Eagles Dec. 14.

The girls defeated the Tigers 40-30 and fell to the Eagles 51-27 to put their record at 3-1 early in the season. The boys won both their games to improve to 4-0. Lustre defeated Manhattan 40-30 and beat the Eagles 62-55 in overtime.

Girls

The Lions took an 11-7 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Tigers 15-9 in the second for a 26-16 advantage at the half. Manhattan came out strong in the third and outpaced Lustre 7-2, cutting the Lions’ lead to 5 after three quarters. Lustre put up 12 in the final eight minutes and held the Tigers to 7 for the 10-point victory.

The Lions snagged 21 rebounds, six assists and 17 steals in their win.

Kencia Brown led all scorers with 21 points. Lauren Fast connected for 7 and Lauryn Holzrichter added 6 points. Sidney Klatt, Justice Byers and Hannah Brown scored 2 a piece.

The Lions fell behind 15-8 against the Eagles in the first quarter the following day. Manhattan outpaced Lustre 14-12 in the second for a 29-20 lead over the Lions at the half. The Eagles held the Lions to 2 in the third while putting up 14 points. In the final eight minutes, Lustre was outscored 8-5 for the 51-27 loss.

The Lions had 13 rebounds, eight assists and six steals in the loss.

Holzrichter led the Lions with 12 points while K. Brown put 9 on the score sheet. H. Brown scored 4 and Samantha Neufeld 2 points.

Boys

Lustre put up double digit scoring in every quarter against Manhattan, taking a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. They added 24 in the second while holding the Tigers to 4 for a 37-10 lead at the half. Manhattan fought back with 17 in the third but the Lions put up 20 for a 57-27 lead heading into the final eight minutes where the Lions outscored the Tigers 13-10 for the win.

Johnslee Pierre paced Lustre Christian with 15 points. Byron Ewing and Cam Reddig each put 12 on the score sheet while Prestyn Klatt added 10 points. Diek Olfert connected for 7, Joel Reddig 5 and Clay Reddig 4 points. Hadden Olfert hit a three-pointer while Nathan Fast scored a bucket.

Lustre Christian hit the court the following night against fellow state tournament team, Manhattan Christian. The Eagles went up 16-12 after one and held a 26-23 lead at the half over the Lions. Lustre came out hot in the third and outscored the Eagles 17-9 to carry a 40-35 lead into the fourth quarter. Manhattan Christian outpaced Lustre by 5 points, 16-11, to tie the game at 51-51 and force overtime.

Five Lions scored in overtime for a total of 11 points while the Eagles had two players with a two-pointer each as Lustre Christian went on to win 62-55.

Ewing scored 2 points in overtime to bring his total to 15 in the game. Klatt’s third three-pointer came in extra time as he went on to 13 points while Clay Reddig hit 4 of his 11 points in overtime. Cam Reddig put up 9 points total with 2 in overtime. Pierre hit three from downtown for 9 points while J. Reddig put 5 on the score sheet. Clay Reddig led in assists with five followed by Cam Reddig with five. D. Olfert and Klatt both had two while J. Reddig and Pierre added an assist each.

Ewing notched a double-double with 10 rebounds. Pierre pulled down five boards and Cam Redding had four. Clay Reddig and Klatt both grabbed three while J. Reddig had two rebounds.

Cam Reddig and D. Olfert both had three steals with Clay Reddig, Klatt and Pierre getting a takeaway each. Klatt had two blocks with Pierre and Ewing stopping a shot each.

Lustre Christian hosts the Nashua Porcupines Thursday, Dec. 19.
