The North Country basketball teams both started their 2024-25 seasons with 2-0 records. The Mavericks boys and girls teams played the Jordan Mustangs and the Bridger Scouts in Miles City Dec. 6 and 7.
The Maverick boys beat the Jordan Mustangs 52-49 Friday and downed the Bridger Scouts 57-42 Saturday.
North Country fell behind 19-15 in the first quarter against Jordan but battled back to lead 32-29 at the half. Jordan took a 1-point lead after three after outscoring the Mavericks 13-9 in the third quarter. North Country flipped the script in the fourth, outpacing the Mustangs 11-7 for the 52-49 North Country win.
The Mavericks shot 44.2 percent from the field, 12-25, and 38.9 percent from three point range, 7-18. The went 7-18 on free throws. The Mavericks grabbed 28 rebounds, eight offensive and 20 defensive. They had 12 assists, six deflections, six steals, seven blocks, 15 turnovers and 15 personal fouls.
Blaine Downing racked up 20 points followed by Jake Brown with 10 points. Laytin Erickson added 8 and Kade Strommen 5 points. Coy Bowman, Sam Simonson and Chase Albus scored 3 points a piece.
The Mavericks came out hotter against Bridger, taking a 16-7 lead after one. North Country led 29-19 at the half. The Scouts outpaced the Mavericks 14-10 in the third but North Country battled back with 18 in the fourth while holding Bridger to 10 points for the 57-43 victory.
The Mavericks shot 40.0% from the field, going 21-42 from the field and 3-18 from beyond the arc. They made six of nine free throws. The Mavericks grabbed 34 boards, 20 offensive and 14 defensive. They had 10 assists, eight deflections, 15 steals, one block, 15 turnovers, 17 personal fouls and took one charge.
Downing poured in 32 points for North Country. Brown added 8, Erickson 6, Bowman 5, Strommen 4 and Albus 2 points.
The North Country girls team beat Jordan 47-21 Friday and defeated Bridger 42-26 Saturday.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 12-8 lead over Jordan in the first quarter and outscored the Mustangs 8-4 in the second for a 20-12 halftime lead. They built up their lead in the third on a 16-7 run and in the fourth with an 11-2 run for the 47-21 win.
North Country shot 34.6% on 13-25 in two point range and 5-17 from three point range. They made 6-16 free throws. North Country had 34 rebounds, 16 offensive and 18 defensive. The put up 12 assists, 22 deflections, 19 steals, two blocks, 13 turnovers and 18 fouls.
Shelbi LaBrie and Kodi McColly led the Mavericks with 10 points a piece. Ainsley Erickson and CharLee McColly both added 7 while BaiLee McColly scored 5 points. Emerson Downing scored 4 points with Kennedy Simonson and Berkley Hillman both adding 2 points.
Saturday, the Mavericks established a 14-5 lead in the first eight minutes but were outscored 9-8 in the second quarter for a 22-14 lead at the half. After three, North Country led 27-20. They went on a 15-6 run in the fourth for the 42-26 victory.
North Country shot 30.9% from the field on 14-31 from two point range and 3-24 from three point land. They hit 5-12 free throws. The Mavericks pulled down 30 rebounds, 15 offensive and 15 defensive. They had 13 assists, 15 deflections, nine steals, two blocks, 12 turnovers and 15 fouls.
LaBrie poured in 16 points followed by B. McColly with 8 and Downing with 6 points. C. McColly scored 5, Hillman 4, and Simonson 3 points.
The Mavericks travel to Lewistown this weekend to take on Centerville and Roy-Winifred Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14. The girls take on Centerville Friday at 7 p.m. and Roy-Winifred at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. North Country’s schedule shows the boys team playing Centerville at 3 p.m. Saturday.
