Ice Dawgs Compete At Damon McLaughlin Tournament

The high school Ice Dawgs competed at the Damon McLaughlin Tournament in Sidney Dec. 6-8. Glasgow competed against some tough teams from Canada and the North Dakota Jr. Gold league. The Dawgs lost to Radville, Saskatchewan; Sidney, Minot, and Crosby.

“These are tough tournaments …” Head Coach Michael Hunter told the Courier. “for being down players (injuries, illness) our team did well. We’re young this season and some of the underclassmen have had to step up.”

Glasgow lost 1-4 to Radville in their first game Friday. Radville scored first in the game but Glasgow answered in the first on a goal from Elijah Howland, assist Dillon Hughes. Radville added two more goals before the end of the first and scored again in the second for the win.

Jacob Potter faced 29 shots in net while Glasgow put 51 pucks on Radville’s goal. Both teams were called for five penalties. In the third period Ian Anderson sat for tripping, Mason Hunter sat for tripping, Aiden Price was called for interference. Tavin Boland sat for tripping and Charlie Cornwell was called for tripping.

The Dawgs faced Richland in their first game Saturday and lost 5-2. Boland scored first on a power play with an assist from Cornwell. Richland scored twice before the buzzer to take a 2-1 lead.

Boland scored short-handed in the second but again Richland scored twice for a 4-2 lead at intermission. The Rangers made it 5-2 in the third for the win.

Kolten Hansen took the loss in net after facing 41 shots. The Dawgs’ offense put seven pucks on net at the other end of the ice. Glasgow was called for eight penalties while Richland had three infractions. Cornwell, was called for hooking in the first. In the second Mason Hunter sat for tripping and cross checking, Carter Holte was called for holding, and Boland sat for cross checking. In the third Hunter sat for roughing, Price sat for tripping and Jack Miller was called for slashing.

Glasgow faced Minot in their second game Saturday and lost 8-3. Anderson scored in the first on an assist from Hughes. Cornwell scored an unassisted SHG in the second and Anderson hit a PPG with an assist from Cornwell in the third. Minot however scored four times in the first, once in the second and three times in the third for the win.

Potter faced 45 shots while the offense put five pucks on the Minot netminder. Glasgow was called for 11 infractions while Minot had four calls against them. In the first Price, roughing, misconduct; and Cornwell, elbowing, took seats. Hughes, interference, Hunter, unsportsmanlike and misconduct, Hughes, interference, and Boland, elbowing, were sent to the sin bin. Hunter, roughing, Price, cross check and Boland, interference drew whistles in the third period.

“Penalties were concerning during Saturday’s games,” Coach Hunter said. “We need better discipline from our upperclassmen.

Glasgow faced Crosby Sunday in their final game of the tournament and lost 4-0. Hansen faced 36 shots in net as his offense put nine shots on net at the other end of the ice. “Very happy with our goaltending (Potter and Hansen),” Coach Hunter said. “They gave us a chance in every game.”

The Dawgs were called for seven penalties while Crosby held theirs to two in the game. Hunter and Holte both sat for interference in the first. Hunter, roughing, took a seat in the second. Price, interference; Boland, tripping; Price, interference, and Miller, unsportsmanlike, were sent to the box in the third.

Coach Hunter added, “... Kimber Dulaney, Reilly Llewellyn and Jack Miller. These players were outstanding this weekend in all three zones … especially in the defense zone.”

The Dawgs are off this weekend. The return to the ice in Billings Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 21 and 22 in Billings. Glasgow play sat 7:30 p.m. Dec. 21 and 9:30 a.m. Dec. 22.
