The Glasgow Ice Dawgs high school team opened their 2024-25 season in Helena Nov. 23 and 24 with two wins and a loss. Glasgow beat Helena 5-4 5-1 Saturday. Sunday, Glasgow lost the third game 3-1.
Glasgow struck first in their first game, drawing both the first penalty and the first goal. Tavin Boland drew the first whistle four minutes into action and took a two minute break for tripping. The Dawgs also lit up the scoreboard first on a goal from Carter Holte, assist Reilly Llewellyn, with 9:45 left in the first period. Helena answered 24 seconds later and took the lead with 5:30 left in the period. The Dawgs put the puck in the net again with 1:59 on the clock. Tristan Powell lit up the lamp with an assist from Dillon Hughes to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the second.
Tavin Boland put Glasgow up a goal 2:43 into the second period with a helper from Aiden Price. Llewellyn took a seat just over two minutes later for slashing. Mason Hunter and Helena’s Zac Halpin both took seats in the sin bin for roughing with 11:43 left in the period. Helena answered just after the penalty kills to tie the game with 3:05 left before intermission. The Dawgs again ended the period with a Glasgow goal. Holte put the puck past the Helena netminder on a Glasgow power play with 34 seconds left on the clock.
Hitting the ice for the final 17 minutes of action, Glasgow held a 4-3 lead. Boland extended the Dawgs’ lead to two goals and scored the game winning goal 4:01 into the third with help from Charlie Cornwell. Helena put the puck past Dawgs’ goalie Jacob Potter with 19 ticks left on the clock giving Glasgow the 5-4 win to start the season.
Potter faced 25 shots on his net in the game for a 0.840 save percentage. Glasgow put 46 shots on the Helena netminder over the 51 minutes of play.
Glasgow had four penalties for 8 minutes in the box while Helena held their violations to three for six minutes in the sin bin.
The Dawgs hit the ice again that evening for the second of three games against Helena. Glasgow put on a special teams show with two short handed goals and a power play goal in the 5-1 win.
Joshua Llewellyn took the first seat in the sin bin in first period for roughing though neither team capitalized on Helena’s 5-on-4 advantage. Elijah Howland took an involuntary two minute break for tripping with 4:10 on the clock. The Dawgs took control of the kill with two goals. Boland, assist Cornwell, scored 1:03 into Helena’s man advantage. Cornwell put the game winning goal in net 24 seconds later with an assist from Hunter.
Helena scored in the second period to cut Glasgow’s lead to one goal. R. Llewellyn took an extended break from play on a 2-and-10 boarding call.
Glasgow found the back of the net three times in the third period to insure their win. Boland scored 2:23 into the final period with help from Cornwell and Howland. He added an unassisted goal for the hat trick just over three minutes later. Hughes found the back of the net on a Glasgow power play with 8:45 left in the game. Powell assisted on the goal.
Dawgs’ netminder Kolten Hansen earned the W by turning away 27 of 28 attempts on his home for a 0.964 save percentage. Glasgow put 36 pucks on Helena’s goaltender.
Helena had three penalties in the game for six minutes in the box. Glasgow had five penalties for 20 minutes. In addition to J. Llewellyn, Howland and R. Llewellyn, Hunter sat for roughing and Jack Miller drew a whistle for tripping in the third period.
Helena found the back of the net first Sunday, scoring midway through the first period. Glasgow tied the game in the second period on a goal from Powell, assist Boland, with 11:04 on the clock before intermission.
Helena regained the lead 3:30 into the third and put the insurance goal in net with 3:12 left in the game to take the game off Glasgow 3-1.
The Dawgs put 43 shots on net while Hansen turned away 40-of-43 attempts by Helena for a 0.914 save percentage.
Helena held their penalty minutes to eight on four infractions while Glasgow racked up 37 minutes in the sin bin on seven whistles. Miller took a two-minute roughing call and a 5-and-10 fighting penalty in the first period. Cronwell sat for tripping and Powell took a hooking call in the second while Hunter drew a 2-and-10 for head contact in the same period. Hunter, hooking; Price, roughing, and Cornwell, roughing, took involuntary seats in the third period.
Glasgow starts the season with a 2-1 record. The Dawgs’ opening weekend performance puts them in fifth place out of nine teams in the Big Sky High School League.
The Dawgs are off this week for the Thanksgiving break. Glasgow returns to the ice Friday through Sunday, Dec. 6-8, in Sidney for the Damon McLaughlin Tournament.
