Scottie Football Falls To Eureka In Playoffs

End Season 4-1, 7-3 Overall

The Scottie football season came to an end Nov. 2 with a first round playoff loss to the Eureka Lions. Glasgow lit up the scoreboard first but the Lions put up two quick touchdowns in the third quarter to take control of the game and go on to win 35-14.

"Tough way to end the season with a great group of kids.," Assistant Coach Sam Tedrow told the Courier. "Turnovers and not executing in the red zone was the story in this one. Eureka's defensive front really gave us some fits."

The Scotties opted to receive to open the game and drove down the field for nearly seven minutes culminating in a Wyatt Babb 10-yard touchdown catch with 5:05 remaining in the first quarter. Jose Ramon Osuna Lopez added the point after touchdown for a 7-0 Glasgow lead. The quarter ended after each team was forced to punt without scoring.

Eureka started the second quarter with a big run and a touchdown by Haiden Johnson. The visitors' Grant Brown added the PAT to tie the game with 10:06 remaining in the first half. The teams battled for roughly 10 more minutes of action before Eureka took the lead. The Lions punched into the end zone on a 1-yard run by Rogan Lytle. Brown added the PAT for a 14-7 Eureka lead with 17.4 seconds left on the clock.

Glasgow kicked off to start the second half and the Lions made quick work of their possession, scoring 57 seconds into the third on a Johnson 51-yard run. A successful Brown kick gave Eureka a 21-7 lead. Glasgow regained possession but a Khye Gamas pitch to Wyatt Sugg was recovered by the Lions and returned by Lytle into a 33-yard touchdown run. Myles Yoakam blocked the PAT attempt as the Lions took a 27-7 lead over the Scotties with 10:35 remaining in the third quarter.

The Scotties answered just under five minutes later with a strong march down the field leading to a Gamas quarterback keeper and a 1-yard touchdown run. Osuna Lopez put the ball through the uprights to cut Eureka's lead to 27-14.

The Lions' Johnson broke through the Scottie defensive line late in the quarter to run 68 yards into the end zone. Eureka successfully converted on the two-point attempt with 1:20 left on the clock in the third to extend their lead to 35-14.

The two teams went back and forth with some big plays in the fourth quarter but neither was able to convert their possessions into another score. The ball went back to Eureka with 2:15 left in the game and the victory formation followed. The Scotties ended the season with a 4-1, 7-3 overall record.

Glasgow's defense gave up 411 yards to Eureka: 373 rushing and 38 passing. The Lions had 43 runs, averaging 8.6 yards per attempt and were 3-for-7 on passes for a 12.6 yard gain average.

Coy Nelson led the Scotties with nine total tackles: five unassisted and four assisted. Connor Hudyma added six solo takedowns and one assisted for seven total tackles. Yoakam added four unassisted, one assisted and a tackle for loss, totaling six tackles.

Jaydeen Hanshew put up five total with three solo, one assisted and one for loss. Sugg also added five total tackles: three unassisted, one assisted and one for loss. Andrew Linder, Gamas and Tavin Boland all added four total tackles to the stats sheet. Linder had two solo and two assisted with a pass break up. Gamas had four tackles on his own with a fumble recovery and two PBUs. Boland had a forced fumble with two unassisted and two assisted tackles.

Dillon Hughes notched three unassisted tackles followed by Grady Nielen with two total: one solo and one assisted with a PBU. Nick Solorzano and Cash Stulc each had one unassisted tackle.

On kickoffs, Osuna Lopez went TB, 20 and 25 yards. He was 2-for-2 on PATs. Babb put up 50, 46, 46 and 42 yards on punts. Solorzano gained 20, 20, 20, 1 and 21 yards on kick off returns. On the punt return Boland was MFPR, Solorzano had 1 yard and Liam Chapman 5 yards.

Offensively the Scotties gained 295, 315 net yards. Glasgow was 14-for-28 on passes with an interception and touchdown, advancing 184 yards, 6.6 yard average per attempt. The Scotties gained 111 yards on 37 carries, averaging 3.0 yards per run with a touchdown and two for losses.

Glasgow had 15 1st downs and was 7-for-15 on 3rd downs while going 2-for-4 on 4th downs. They were 2-for-5 in the red zone and lost 23 yards on four sacks.

Gamas was 13-for-27 on passes, advancing Glasgow 151 yards. He had a 10-yard touchdown throw and an interception, averaging 5.6 yards per throw. Babb had one 33-yard toss. He also was on the receiving end of the 10-yard touchdown pass. He had five other receptions for a total of 50 yards.

Kade Strommen came down with two catches for 48 total yards followed by Nielsen who gained 42 yards on three catches. Sugg added 24 yards on two receptions while Chapman gained 20 yards on one catch.

Gamas also led the Scotties in rushing yards with an 82-yard gain on 13 carries. He averaged 6.3 yards a run and scored a touchdown. Sugg advanced the tema 47 yards on 17 carries, averaging 2.8 yards a run. Chapman put up three carries for 5 yards while the team lost 23 yards on four runs.

"Really proud of our guys for not giving up the fight until the final whistle. Truly shows the type of young men this senior class has, what great examples for our younger players and the little kids coming to games to watch them play," Coach Tedrow concluded. "This senior class is the type of group that sets the foundation for a football program. I am so proud of them and all they have accomplished and built for Scottie Football and this community."

Seniors Nic Solorzano, Wyatt Babb, Kade Strommen, Jose Ramon Osuna Lopez, Connor Hudyma, Jaydeen Hanshew, Dillon Hughes, Rex Monson, Coy Nelson, Michael King and Myles Yoakam made their final walk up and down Scottie Field following the loss. Glasgow will see 10 seniors on the roster next season if all players return, plus a mix of underclassmen.
