Red Ribbon Week is the nation's largest and longest-running drug-use prevention campaign. With it's mission to help keep kids drug-free, this year's theme was "Life Is A Movie" and both Glasgow Middle School students as well Opheim students participated.
The Glasgow Middle School recognized Red Ribbon Week Oct. 21 through 24 by going to work on decorating their classroom doors with the movie theme, with many students utilizing their favorite Disney movies as inspiration. With support from the Glasgow Police Department the Middle School concluded with the door decorating contest and celebration.
The Glasgow Police Department awarded first place to Mrs. Legare's eighth-grade home base with their door: Monsters Inc, We Scare Because We Care. Her class recieved a pizza party.
Second place was awarded to Ms. Weber's sixth-grade home base with their door: Chucky, Drugs are not Child's Play. Her class reieved hot chocolate and donuts.
"I would say that Red Ribbon Week went pretty well," stated Glasgow Middle School counselor Ms. Nicole Boos. "Every morning we had a reading for the students that explained what the theme for the doors were and why it was important. All of the home base classrooms did an amazing job of linking the theme to a movie. All students received ice cream for participating."
Opheim School observed Red Ribbon Week Oct. 28 through 31 with designated theme days of Movie Monster – Scare Drugs Away," Stunt Double - Don't Let Drugs Stunt Your Future, Spotlight The Vikings – Shine Away From Drugs and Halloween – Drugs Are Not A Treat Only A Trick. Sponsored by the Opheim STUCO, students from throughout the school dressed up to bring being drug-free to the forefronts of everyone's mind.
Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Since that time, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children and families.
