Putting Money Back in Our Pockets

Dear Editor,

"Money back in our pockets" is top priority for Washington, D.C., talking to Montanans.

Four plus years as a Legislative Aide at the U.S. Capitol and canceling $44 billion in wasteful government programs is a start to reaching that goal.

Washington, D.C., already knows how to get money back in taxpayer pockets.

The President, U.S. House, and U.S. Senate agree on a two-step 'action plan.'

Goal: Lower the U.S. $1.8 trillion budget deficit and the $950 billion interest rate paid on the deficit every year recently reported by the Congressional Budget Office.

Step 1: President directs each Federal Department deliver a 2025 budget 15 percent less than 2024 and increase federal contract competition to 75 percent to 80 percent.

Congressional Budget Office and White House Office of Management and Budget team as "referees" calling "fouls" on any budget "gimmicks." Federal Department competition savings get reinvested in 'good government' cost-saving programs.

Step 2: Congress adopt the "Pay-As-You-Go" PAYGO rule. Simply put: If Congress increases the budget of one program, another program gets cut the same amount as the increase. PAYGO prohibits budget deficits in the current year and next 11 consecutive years.

The euphemism we used in budget meetings at the U.S. Capitol: "Who's ox is getting gored to pay for your budget hike?"

Less debt, less interest paid on the debt, less taxes, more money in Montanan's pockets.

Sincerely,

John Metzger
