Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
The 1949 blizzard was a series of storms that hit the Great Plains from January to mid-February, causing the worst winter in the region's history. Along with this storm came the birth of Kenneth Thomas Borseth on Jan. 17, 1949, in Sidney, Mont., to Ole and Jean (Bond) Borseth. Ken passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024, in Billings, Mont., at the age of 75.
He was raised and educated in Williston, N.D., and graduated high school from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, Minn. As a young man, Ken spent much of his time working on the family farm south of Watford City, N.D. The strong work ethic that Ken was well known for started on this farm and continued throughout his entire life.
After graduation, Ken went to Fort Peck, Mont., working in construction and as a ranch hand for a short time. While frequenting the Ft. Peck Cafe, he met a waitress named Cecelia Jimison. In 1968, Ken enlisted in the United States Navy, and in the fall of 1969, he married Cecelia. Together, they had one daughter, Tricia Borseth-Mires (Jim). During his time in the Navy, Ken traveled the world but was stationed in Jacksonville, Fla. Ken and his family lived in Florida for a couple of years before moving back to be closer to family.
Ken resided in Glasgow, Mont., up until his death. He had a work ethic second to none, which he instilled in his daughter and three grandchildren. He was the manager of Markle's Oil for over 30 years. For the past 20 years, he was employed by the Valley County Road Dept. as well as the Glasgow Stockyards. Ken was also a retired volunteer fireman for the town of Glasgow.
He loved spending time with family and friends. His favorite titles were 'Grandpa Ken' and 'Papa Ken,' given by his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Ken had a passion for horses, which he shared with his grandchildren. While many knew Ken for his "tough" exterior, those close to him experienced his big heart and helpful spirit.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws Roy and Nona Jimison; brother Jim Borseth; and nephew Steven Jimison.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Cecelia; one daughter, Tricia Mires and Jim (Glendive, Mont.); three grandchildren, Morgan Schaaf and Jesse, Glendive, Keegan Mires, Watford City, Chloe Mires, Glendive; and one great-granddaughter, Scout Schaaf, Glendive; siblings John (Ellen) Borseth, Pete (Kari) Borseth, and Mary (Richard) Stenberg; along with many nieces and nephews, including Sara Jimison, who he considered a "fourth grandchild," and many friends.
In the words of Ken, "Be careful and do your best!"
