Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
Girls Take Second, Boys Fourth
The Scottie girls cross country team placed second at the Sidney Invitational Oct. 12 and the boys finished in fourth place.
“Sidney went really well for us last Saturday - I was proud of all our kids! I saw a lot of them move up and compete in the middle of the race, which is what we’ve been looking for this season. Looking back at the week, we didn’t have a great practice on Tuesday, but Thursday was the best I’ve seen them run. So I was pretty sure Saturday was going to go well,” head coach Tim Phillips told the Courier.
Glasgow’s girls scored 70 points, finishing behind Dawson County’s 50 points. Poplar finished in third at 78 points followed by Sidney, 98; Custer County, 110; Scobey, 153; Brockton, 158, and Richey-Lambert, 176 points. The girls set three personal records and one season record at the meet.
The Scottie boys finished with 76 points behind Dawson County, 46; Poplar, 72, and Sidney, 75 points. Scobey followed in fifth with 111, Wolf Point, 156; Custer County, 156, and Terry, 203 points. The Glasgow boys notched eight personal bests in Sidney.
Girls
Tanae Baker won her second event this season with a season best time of 19:31.1, knocking 58 seconds off her time at the Scottie Invite. She outpaced 39 other runners for the win. Kheyerah Bilger set a personal record at 21:54.8 for 12th place. Her time was a season best by 10 seconds and 21 seconds faster than her time in Sidney last season. Kimber Dulnaey knocked 1:12 off her time from last year and 1:11 off her previous best this season. She finished in 13th place at 21:58.8, a four-second personal best.
Jensina Tweten finished in 18th place at 22:34.0, an improvement from her 2023 Sidney showing. Riley Evenson-Glasoe dropped 13 seconds from her 2023 Sidney meet with a 23:40.5 time. She finished in 28th place. Josie Kemp also set a personal record, finishing with a 25:37.9 time. She finished in 41st place with her four-second season best and dropped 3:45 off her time from last year’s Sidney meet.
Mary Dykema placed eighth in the JV girls race with a 29:51.7 time. Haleigh Huntsman did not compete in Sidney.
“For the girls, it is so much fun to see Tanae back racing again. She didn’t go out too fast like a couple of the other girls, and she came back and got them once we hit the hills. I think that will be her strength in Missoula in two weeks. She’s pretty sore, but that’s to be expected,” Coach Phillips said. “Kheyerah, Kimber and Josie all had personal bests, and Jensina was just a few seconds away. Kheyerah and Kimber were really close to each other the whole race, so I’m hoping they pull each other along even faster the next couple weeks. Riley and Mary have been biking the past couple weeks as we try to get them healthy. I think they’ll be much faster in Harlem this Friday.”
Boys
“The boys ran extremely well: out of the 11 that ran, they cut almost 3 minutes off their personal best times. Nine of the 11 had personal bests, and Timothy [Pearson] was just a couple seconds off, and was over three minutes faster than Sidney last year! Kyler Holinde is still working through some calf issues, but he still had a great surge mid-race, and again at the end,” Phillips remarked.
Kyler Holinde paced the Scottie boys with a 10th place showing out of 70 varsity runners. He finished with an 18:23.7 time. Ted See set a one-second personal record and a 14-second season best at 18:45.4 for 13th place. Kyler Whitman set a 19-second personal record, a 65-second season best and dropped 38 seconds from the 2023 Sidney Invite. He ran an 18:49.0 for 14th place.
Adam Mickelson took 25th place at 19:13.2, a time of 11 seconds faster than his 2023 Sidney meet. He set a personal record by 3 seconds and a season best time by 36 seconds. Garrett Thompson ran a two-second personal and season best at 19:14.0. He finished in 26th place. Rowen Kloker set a personal and season best by 10 seconds. He ran a 19:14.4 for 27th place. Timothy Pearson ran a 19:41.3 for 35th place. He dropped 3:02 off his time in Sidney last year.
Phillips said, “Kyler Whitman had a fantastic race. I think we’ve finally got his stomach issues figured out. And in the pack of Ted, Kyler W., Adam, Garrett and Rowen, there was only a 30-second total gap between our 2-6 guys. And Timothy was only 17 seconds back of that.”
Owen Thompson led the Scottie JV team, finishing fourth out of 17 runners. He ran a 20:19.5, 41 seconds than last year’s meet and a personal best by 15 seconds as well as a 29-second season best. Gage Larsen finished right behind him in fifth place with a personal record 20:31.7 time. His time was a season best by 15 seconds and 62 seconds faster than his time in Sidney last year.
Jack Miller ran a 1:15 personal and season best time. He finished in 20:32.0 and sixth place. Aaron Mickelson took 14th place at 24:17.3. He set a personal and season best by 37 seconds. Jack Milam did not compete in Sidney.
“Owen also had his best race ever, and really looked like he was driving with the arms better. Gage was trying out some new spikes, and his feet were hurting - but he still ran a 15 second p.r.,” Phillips said. “We still haven’t figured out Jack Milam’s knee issue, so he was unable to run on Saturday, but I’m still hoping to have him back with us.”
“Our last regular season race is this Friday in Harlem. It’s a flat, fast course, but the footing in some spots is a little tough,” Phillips concluded. “And then it’s off to state in Missoula on the 26th.”
Glasgow is set to close out the regular season this Friday, Oct. 18, at the Harlem Wildcat Invite.
