Fort Peck Theatre Celebrates 90 Years And Takes On Ambitious HVAC Modernization Project

For the Courier

On July 13, the Fort Peck Fine Arts Council (FPFAC) commemorated the 90th anniversary of the Historic Fort Peck Theatre with a special presentation attended by approximately 120 patrons. This milestone highlights a rich history and an exciting future for the beloved venue.

The Fort Peck Theatre first opened its doors on Nov. 15, 1934, playing movies around the clock. Over the decades, the theatre has become a cherished landmark, its enduring charm a testament to the community's dedication to its preservation.

The anniversary event included a poignant short film created by the FPFAC, which reflected on the theatre's storied past and its original mission. Despite its build as temporary structure, the theatre has withstood the test of time, largely due to the devoted efforts of FPFAC members who have tirelessly worked to maintain and enhance the building over the past 55 years.

Today, the focus of the council's efforts is on a critical modernization project: upgrading the theatre's HVAC system. According to the Fort Peck Theatre Condition Assessment Report by A&E Design, the current mechanical setup is outdated and requires significant overhaul. The recommended upgrades include:

Removal and Demolition: Existing mechanical equipment, ductwork, piping, hangers, and hazardous materials will be removed.

Installation of New System: A new water-cooled variable refrigerant heating and cooling system will be installed. This involves setting up a boiler plant, outdoor dry cooler, refrigerant distribution piping, and decentralized fan coils. Potential use of existing tunnels for piping and duct distribution is also being explored. A new dry cooler will be placed on a concrete platform on the north side of the building. The system will feature a heat recovery ventilator to meet the theatre's ventilation needs.

The scope of this mechanical work encompasses approximately 10,800 square feet of interior space and additional exterior areas. Factors influencing the project's budget include demolition, environmental material testing and removal, project location, bonds, taxes, insurance, permitting fees, and general contractor overhead and profit. While the Montana Historic Preservation Grant awarded to the council in 2024 provides $500,000 for the project, it does not cover the entire cost of the project.

To bridge the financial gap, the FPFAC is actively seeking donations and applying for grants from patrons in addition to foundations that have previously supported the Historic Theatre. The Fort Peck Senior Citizens have made the inaugural community donation for the project. The modernization effort is crucial not only for preserving the theatre but also for enabling year-round maintenance, upgrades, and general care of the building. This will ensure that the theatre remains a vibrant community hub, potentially expanding its programming to include small community events alongside the regular performance season.

Bid packages for the HVAC modernization project will be available starting Sept. 15. For more information or to support the project, please contact Executive Director Kari Prewett at 406-228-9216.

As the Fort Peck Theatre embarks on this new chapter, the community's unwavering support and enthusiasm continue to drive its preservation and enhancement, ensuring that this historic venue remains a beacon of culture and entertainment for future generations.

Help to celebrate the theatre's continued legacy by attending the closing weekend performance of Honky Tonk Laundry at Fort Peck Summer Theatre, Aug. 30, 31 & Sept. 1.
