FMDH Intern Insights

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to intern at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital (FMDH) here in Glasgow, Mont.? Well, I'm here to say it is an extremely educational and positive experience. I grew up in Glasgow wondering what it would be like to intern at FMDH, and this summer I got to experience it.

Internships are about learning and obtaining experience. To receive the full experience of being an intern, you must be willing to learn many new skills. You must be okay with not knowing how to do something and embrace asking questions when need be.

Interning at FMDH has been a very beneficial experience. Not only did I gain multiple new role models, but I also obtained numerous new skills and knowledge that will help me tremendously for my future career. I will be a senior in college at MSU Billings this fall, and I am excited to utilize my new set of skills when I go back to school. I plan to graduate with my Bachelors of Marketing in the spring of 2025. After graduation, my goal is to use my marketing degree to get a job that fulfills me, whether that is working in a Marketing Department at a hospital, business, or company. Interning at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital has showed me not only that I can see myself loving to work in Marketing, but also enjoying working in a healthcare setting as well.

In the Marketing Department specifically, I have received a variety of hands-on tasks and projects that have led me to learn and grow immensely. This internship has been extremely valuable, and it let me have a sneak peek into what my future job could look like. A task I really enjoyed this summer was scheduling social media posts for Facebook and Instagram. I enjoyed learning how to convey information to the public in an interesting and attention-grabbing way. Handling social media is a very important job because FMDH has lots of information, events, and news to communicate to the public. Another task that I enjoyed, but also took me out of my comfort zone, was writing and recording radio ads. I learned that radio ads are not always as easy as they seem, and I know that because I had to retake mine 10 times.

It is very beneficial to get an idea of what fields you are intrigued by, and which ones you are not. If you are interested in participating in a summer internship, at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital, I strongly encourage you to apply! We are lucky to have a hospital in our community that offers internships, and we should take full advantage of this great learning opportunity.

It's important to get a glance at different areas of healthcare and see how employees go about their daily routines. FMDH works with each intern to make sure their experience relates to the fields they're most interested in, whether that is only two departments or rotating through all the departments in the hospital. I was one out of eight interns this summer and hope to see more take part in it! When applications are released in February, you can go to the FMDH website http://www.fmdh.org to apply!
