Change War Connects Classroom Learning To Community Learning

During the last month of school, Irle Elementary third graders in Mrs. Swenson's class decided to apply what they were learning in the classroom and put the information to use in the real world. During a lesson on community service, specifically giving back to their community, the class wanted to do something for the community they live in.

"We were learning about a community garden, and we wanted to do something for our own community," stated Holly Bell. "We decided to do a change drive for kindergarten through fifth-grade to see who can donate the most amount of money," explained Stella DeDobbeleer.

With many different causes in the community they could potentially give to, the class decided on splitting all donations between three causes, the Community Pool, the Skate Park and to the Mix family for cancer treatment.

"We were set on doing all three of these things because a lot of kids skate and do swim lessons. Our friend's dad is going through cancer and we wanted to help them too," stated McKenna Engstrom.

With the assistance of their teacher, the class gathered big water jugs, labeled and then decorated the jugs for each of the grades. Students then brought their spare coins and dollar bills, while also enlisting help from family and friends, to fill the jugs. Mrs. Swenson's class then sorted the coins and dollar bills in order to make counting at the bank easier.

Kindergarten raised $161.15, first grade raised $213.74, second grade raised $279.53, fourth grade raised $287.05 and fifth grade raised $115.07.

The third grade raised $999.44, due in part of four girls in Mrs. Bense's class coming together to host a lemonade stand. Harlee VanderMars, Ava Odom, Hunter Thompson and Lyndsey Palmer, wanted to contribute to the cause, specifically to the Mix family, so they took matters into their own hands. "It was fun to raise money for the Mix family. We felt bad because no one deserves cancer," reflected Thompson on why the girls did the stand.

In the end a grand total of $2,055.98 was raised and the total was split between the three causes, with each receiving $685.33.

The inspiration to give back will continue as students in Mrs. Swenson's class have plans this summer to continue with lemonade stands, snow cone stands, nail salon stands as well as a s'mores bar to continue to give back.
