Reds Drop Doubleheader Against Cardinals, Split With Blue Jays

The Glasgow Reds dropped their doubleheader against the Billings Cardinals June 25 by 11-0 and 5-3. They rebounded to split their two games against the Billings Blue Jays June 28, losing 14-2 in the first game but fighting back to win 7-6 in the second game. The Reds hold a 6-15 record on the season now.

The Cardinals took an early lead over the Reds in Glasgow in game one June 25 with three runs in the first. They built on the lead with two more in the fourth and closed out the game with six runs in the fifth.

Glasgow was outhit 10-4 and committed three errors to the Cardinals' one. Mason Hunter had two hits and two stolen bases to lead the Reds. Brody Hansen and Cade Hudyma added one hit each and Jack Kolstad had one stolen base.

Hunter started the game on the mound. Over three innings he allowed six hits and five runs, four earned, with one strikeout. Hudyma allowed five earned runs and four hits with three strikeouts over an inning and a third. Aiden Price gave up one earned run over two-thirds of an inning.

The Reds started game two off with a run in the first when Hunter scored on the throw off of Riley Smith's single ground ball. Neither team crossed home plate again until the top of the fifth when the Cardinals took the lead with three runs. They added to their lead with two more runs in the sixth. Glasgow answered with two in the bottom of the same inning. Connor Hudyma sent Smith home with a line drive to center field. Hudyma then scored on a Price double line drive to right field. Billings held on to their 5-3 lead through the seventh for the win.

The Reds had five hits to the Cardinals' six and committed four errors while the Cardinals played a clean game. Hunter, Smith, Connor Hudyma, Price and Hank Hopstad collected hits for the Reds with Smith, Connor Hudyma and Price sending a runner home each. Smith and Hunter both had two stolen bases and Hansen had one.

Friday the Blue Jays established their lead early with two runs in the first, four in the second and two more in the third. They continued the scoring streak with six run in the fourth. Glasgow scored twice in the fifth – Hansen sent Connor Hudyma and Smith home on a double fly ball – but were unable to cut into the Blue Jays' lead enough to keep the game going.

The Reds were outhit 11-3 and committed three errors while Billings had no mistakes. Smith, Connor Hudyma and Hansen had the hits for Glasgow with Hansen notching two RBIs. Hansen and Smith both had a stolen base.

Smith started on the mound for Glasgow, allowing six earned runs and six hits with two strikeouts over two innings. John Grimes gave up two earned runs and two hits over one and two-thirds innings. Kolstad allowed six earned runs on three hits over an inning and a third.

Glasgow battled back in game two after both teams scored once in the first. Smith scored on a wild pitch in the first for the Reds with Hunter at the plate. Billings added a run in the first, second and third to to take a 4-1 lead going into the fifth.

The Reds kept the Blue Jays off the scoreboard before scoring five times in the bottom. Kolstad scored on a Khye Gamas single to center field before Smith sent Hansen and Gamas home on a single ground ball. Smith and Gamas scored on Connor Hudyma ground ball to center field. Connor Hudyma crossed the plate on a Cade Hudyma fly ball to right field.

Billings scored twice in the sixth to tie the game but Hunter singled a ground ball in the bottom of the seventh to send Gamas home for the Reds walk-off.

Glasgow outhit Billings 7-4 but committed three errors to the visitors' two. Connor Hudyma led the way at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Gamas, Smith, Hunter and Cade Hudyma each had a hit and an RBI. Hansen added a hit to the stats. Gamas stole four bases followed by Smith with two and Connor Hudyma with one.

Price went five innings on the mound, allowing four hits and four runs, two earned, with two strikeouts. Hansen threw two strikeouts over one inning while Hunter threw one and gave up two earned runs over another inning.

Glasgow was in Glendive to take on the Blue Devils July 2 but scores and stats were unavailable at press time.

The Reds return to action Wednesday, July 10, in Sidney with a doubleheader against the Richland County Patriots. Games will be at 5 and 7 p.m.
