The Montana Newspaper Association (MNA) held their annual convention the weekend of June 21, in Kalispell, Mont., where a variety of representatives of Montana newspapers gathered, socialized and recognized each other for their work. The convention concluded with the MNA announcing the winners of the 2024 Better Newspaper Contest. This contest is MNA's way of thanking the hardworking professionals in the newspaper industry and highlighting their successes and efforts. The contest recognizes the best Montana journalism from 2023. This year's contest was judged by the Utah Press Association.
The Glasgow Courier was recognized in a variety of categories placing first in Best News Story, Best Headline Writing and Best Page Layout and Design.
The Best News Story was Michelle Bigelbach's story on "Valley View Home Fights The Good Fights In Helena," which was published in the Feb. 22, 2023, issue of The Glasgow Courier.
Bigelbach also received second and third place for the Best General News Photo. The second place photo was from when the Theatre For Young Audience Tour debuted at the Glasgow City-County Library, published in the July 26, 2023, issue. The third place photo was from when EMS Kalu Jensen and Connie Wethern visited Frazer Schools to provide training to teachers and administrators how to utilize the newest addition to the school, the Stop The Bleed Kit, which was published in the Feb. 15, 2023, issue.
Sports Editor Gwendolyne Honrud won first place for Best Headline Writing and placed second in a quite a few categories including Best Sports Story, Best Feature/Lifestyle Story, Best Portrait Photo, and Best Feature Photo.
The Best Sports Story was awarded to the story Honrud wrote in the March 15, 2023, issue titled "Lustre Christian Finishes Historic Season At State With 24-2 Record," while the Best Feature/Lifestyle Story outlined Glasgow High School 2024 graduate Emily See's experience with childhood cancer and running for Glasgow High School, published in the Oct. 18, 2023, issue.
The Best Portrait Photo was for her photo taken of Kevin Taylor and Ally Meland, which was published in the May 24, 2023, issue.
Honrud also won third place for the Mark Henckel Outdoor Writing Award for her "Meet The Mentors: Hi-Line Sportsmen Hunter Apprenticeship Program" story published in the Oct. 25, 2023, issue. Her photo of the Red Bottom Celebration, specifically of Perry Lilley, of Wolf Point, won third in Best Feature Photo. The photo was published in the June 21, 2023, issue.
Terry Trang placed first in Best Page Layout and Design for the successful basketball season coverage which was published in the March 22, 2023 issue. Trang and Honrud also placed third in Best Sponsor Page for congratulating Jack Cornwell in the July 19, 2023, issue.
