The Beacon Bible Camp Annual Meeting was held on June 16, at 4:30 p.m., followed by a Father’s Day Barbecue. Dan Marasco, Camp Board chairman read the Apostle Paul’s parting words from Acts 20, imploring the community to “be on guard for the flock lest savage wolves from among you draw you away.”

Last week, there were 41 campers registered for Senior High camp, 23 boys and 18 girls according to Camp Director Seth Runner. 2023 Camp directors, Dawson Olfert Dan Marasco gave reports as did Clayton Zerbe, secretary, and Marilyn Hilkemann, treasurer. Improvements have been made in the kitchen with oven hood ventilation and a commercial oven. New insurance was found for the camp, and will be evaluated over the next year. A bathroom remodel is planned for July. Steve Trimble and Sean Boysun, both of Wolf Point, were elected to the Board of Trustees. Thanks giving was expressed to Seth Runner for a job well done as the new director of Senior Camp. A total of 41 students in grades four through six are registered for Junior camp in spite of cool, rainy weather. Directed by Dawson Olfert, the speaker is Arlen Lundberg, a chalk artist from North Dakota. One more week of camp remains. It began Sunday, June 23, for incoming seventh through ninth graders.

You may have noticed the word “Juneteenth” on the calendar on Wednesday, June 19. It is a fairly new national holiday to celebrate the day Army General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and demanded that all enslaved persons be released. The slaves were freed by Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation two and a half years earlier, but it had to be made known. We are reminded of the Gettysburg Address which commemorated the battlefield where many lives were lost in the battle to bring freedom, and eloquently reminds us of the commitment our forefathers had when they “brought upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

As summer proceeds, one honorable way to celebrate Juneteenth and the fourth of July is to memorize the Gettysburg Address, and fully understand it’s wisdom.

May you each have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July!
