Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
\The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) recently added resources for Montanans seeking information on water right ownership on leased state trust lands on the newly launched watercomplaint.mt.gov.
“DNRC is dedicated to continuing to provide education and resources related to water rights and state trust lands. We know this can be a complex topic and that’s why we created a website for Montanans to inquire about their water right ownership. DNRC remains committed to private property rights and our constitutional obligation to generate revenue for Montana’s public schools,” said DNRC Director Amanda Kaster.
DNRC is charged with managing 5.2 million acres of state trust land across Montana to generate revenue for Montana schools. State trust lands are leased for timber, surface and mineral resources under the direction of the State Board of Land Commissioners, made up of five elected officials.
“DNRC appreciates the farmers and ranchers across the state who care for and lease state trust lands to help generate funds for schools throughout Montana. In 2023, state trust lands generated $62.2 million for schools and other beneficiaries,” said Director Kaster.
DNRC recently launched a watercomplaint.mt.gov to help answer questions about water right ownership for Montanans who lease state trust lands. New resources added to the website include a presentation from Lieutenant Governor Juras at the recent Land Board meeting regarding the history and status of water rights ownership related to trust lands and a frequently asked questions (FAQ) document. DNRC will continue to develop and add FAQs as questions are identified.
