First Divisional Hardware in Seven Years
The Scottie softball team will be making their first appearance at the State Class B/C Softball Tournament in seven years after clinching third place at the Eastern Divisional held in Glasgow this past weekend.
Glasgow defeated Stillwater 5-2 in the opening round of play Thursday. The win advanced them to the next round against Huntley Project, where Glasgow won 7-1. The Scotties fell to Shepherd, the eventual Eastern champs, 13-0 in the semifinals Friday afternoon. Glasgow faced Conrad Saturday morning for third place. The Scotties put up a good fight but found themselves down by a single run at the end of seven innings, 11-10.
Glasgow took an early lead over Stillwater in the opening round and held it throughout the game. The Scotties led 2-1 after one inning and 4-1 after three. Stillwater scored once in the bottom of the fifth but Glasgow answered with a run in the seventh to maintain their three-run lead and claim the win.
The Scotties were outhit 5-3 in the game but committed no errors while Stillwater had one in the books.
Brynn Donaldson went the distance in the pitcher's circle with seven strikeouts and two earned runs.
Halle Hunter had two hits with a double, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base in the win. Berkley Hillman added a double, a run and an RBI. Tessa Miller notched a run and a stolen base while Macy Martin had one run and one stolen base. Hayden Green added one RBI and Riley Clampitt stole a base.
The Scotties faced Huntley Project Friday morning and won handily with a six-run performance in the third. The teams both scored once in the first before Glasgow turned on the heat in the third. Neither team scored again after the third.
The Scotties had eight hits to Huntley Project's four and two errors to their one in the game.
Donaldson again pitched the Scotties to victory with zero earned runs and 10 strikeouts.
Hunter put up two hits, a run and three RBIs. CharLee McColly added two hits, a run and an RBI and Hillman put a hit, a run and an RBI in the books. Martin had a hit, two runs and a stolen base.
Clampitt put a hit and an RBI on the stats sheet while Green added a hit and a run.
Glasgow advanced to face Shepherd Friday afternoon. Shepherd scored three times in the first, two in the second and twice in the third to build up a commanding lead. They added six runs in the fourth and shut Glasgow out in the top of the fifth to end the game early at 13-0, Shepherd. The Scotties had two hits to Shepherd's seven and committed four errors while the victors turned in a clean game.
Donaldson took the loss with one inning pitched, allowing one earned run and striking out one. Brynlie Boreson went an inning in the circle with two earned runs and two strikeouts. Martin went two innings with four earned runs and one strikeout.
McColly had a hit and a stolen base with Hillman getting the other hit for the Scotties.
The Scotties faced Conrad Saturday morning in the third place slot for the right to advance to the championship game.
Conrad jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and the Scotties answered with two runs in the second. Conrad responded with two in the third while the Scotties scored once to trail 6-3 going into the fourth. Both teams scored twice in the fourth while Conrad sent one across the plate in the fifth and Glasgow scored twice to cut into the lead.
Glasgow kept Conrad off the scoreboard in the top of the sixth before scoring twice to tie the game at 9-9. Conrad scored twice in the top of the seventh to regain the lead. The Scotties sent one runner over the plate but were unable to score a second time to send the game to extra innings, giving Conrad the 11-10 victory.
Glasgow had 14 hits to Conrad's nine and had three errors to Conrad's two in the game.
Donaldson went the distance again in the circle, giving up three earned runs with 10 strikeouts.
Martin had three hits, a run, four RBIs and three stolen bases in leading Glasgow at bat. Hillman added three hits, all doubles, with three runs and RBI. Hunter had two hits, a run, two RBIs and three stolen bases. Tatum Nyquist notched two hits, two runs and an RBI.
Donaldson added two hits while Miller had one hit and a stolen base. Green added a hit and an RBI with McColly and Boreson each getting a run and a stolen base. Clampitt scored a run for the Scotties.
Glasgow will be at the MHSA 2024 State Class B/C Softball Tournament in Billings Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25. The Scotties open the tournament Thursday at 4 p.m. against Manhattan on Field 5 at Stewart Park.
