First Title For Girls Since 1979
The Scottie boys and girls golf teams claimed the top spots at the Northern B Divisional held at Sunnyside May 6 after weather prevented the event from being held May 9. Play began Monday morning in hopes of beating the rain.
The Northern B teams managed nine holes before the incoming storm hit that afternoon. Unfortunately the rain made play that afternoon impossible, and standing rain on the course the following day made playing the second nine holes unfeasible as well. The MHSA made the call to accept a nine-hole format for this year's Divisional meet.
At the end of those nine holes, the Scottie boys team sat at the top of the standings with a total 172, +28. The Glasgow girls had shot a total 219, +75 to also set atop the team rankings. The win made it back-to-back titles for the boys as they won the fourth Divisional title in school history. The girls hoisted the hardware for the first time in 45 years – the last first place coming in 1979 – and for only the second time in school history.
Eli Feezell led the Scottie boys by finishing in a three-way tie for fourth place. He shot a 42, +6. Carter Hoerster and Coy Nelson both shot a 43, +7, to finish in a three-way tie for seventh place.
Connor Koski finished in a four-way tie for 10th place after shooting a 44, +8. Hank Hopstad finished with a 47, + 11, to end in a four-way tie for 17th place.
Mia Peterson paced the Scottie girls. She finished in fifth place with a 53, +17. Laynee Simpson and Allie Palm both shot a 55, +19, to finish in a three-way tie for seventh place.
Annika Smith shot a 56, +20, over the nine holes to tie for 10th place. Aspen Probert tied for 26th place with a 69, +33.
In boys action, Glasgow finished ahead of Cut Bank, 176; Conrad, 179; Choteau, 187; Shelby, 191; Poplar, 196; Malta, 199; Fairview, 205; Chinook, 211, and Harlem, 217. Wolf Point and Fairfield did not field enough golfers for a team score.
The Scottie girls beat out Shelby, 224; Fairfield, 238; Malta, 249, and Choteau, 267. Fairview, Conrad, Wolf Point, Chinook and Poplar failed to field enough golfers for a team score.
"It was an incredible tournament and our golfers played incredible!" enthused head coach Todd Truscott. "Joel [Smith, assistant coach] and I are very proud and excited for State!" Truscott also extended his thanks to all the markers who braved the weather to help out on Monday.
The Scotties were in Shelby for the Class B Golf Tournament Monday and Tuesday, May 13 & 14, but results were unavailable at press time.
