Winter Storm Follows Record Warmth

The old saying goes, “If March comes in like a lion, it will leave like a lamb.” Here in northeast Montana, it is just as likely for the opposite to be true, as is the case this March of 2024. The month started with relatively nice weather for this time of year, and was fairly warm and dry. Sure, there were a couple of light snows in the first week, but overall, the first three weeks of the month were characterized by warm and dry conditions. Most of the snow melted across the region, and it looked very much like spring was finally upon us. On March 18, Glasgow set a new high temperature record of 71 degrees. It was downright balmy that day!

Unfortunately (for those who were ready to be done with snow for the year), the “lion” indeed showed up to bring March out. Two distinct, yet both impactful, winter storms have pummeled northeast Montana over the past week. In fact, a new record 24-hour snowfall was set in Glasgow for March 20, when 2.8 inches fell over the course of the day. The first wave of snow brought new snow accumulations of almost 6 inches to Glasgow. The second wave brought another 4-6 inches of snow accumulation to Glasgow and surrounding towns throughout Valley County.

As of press time, the forecast for the early half of the week has temperatures dipping to near to slightly below zero as well in the mornings, a signal that winter just is not ready to go away without a fight.
