First Divisional Trophy Since 2014
The Scottie boys basketball season came to an end at the Northern B Divisional Tournament in Malta this past weekend with a third place finish with two upset wins.
Glasgow defeated the first-seed Fairfield Eagles 64-53 in the opening round of the tournament before falling 71-66 to the Poplar Indians in a 2B rematch from the District tournament. On the back side of the bracket, the Scotties faced the Chinook Sugarbeeters Saturday morning. Glasgow came back from a half time deficit to squeeze out a 61-59 victory and a trip to the consolation game that night. The Scotties hit the court against the Malta Mustangs that night and fended off a fourth-quarter comeback by the Mustangs for a 70-68 win and a third-place trophy.
Glasgow opened the tournament against Fairfield, the top seed out of the 1B. The Scotties took a 16-14 lead after one and increased that to a 31-24 lead by the half. Fairfield outscored Glasgow 12-11 in the third but the Scotties outpaced the Eagles 22-17 in the fourth for the 64-53 upset victory.
Wyatt Babb led a balanced Scottie scoring sheet with 17 points, and passed the 1,000-point mark in his high school career as a junior. Myles Yoakam hit five from 3-point land and added 16 while Cade Hudyma scored 15 points. Nick Solorzano added 7, Toryn Richards 5 and Connor Hudyma 4 points in the win. Babb also led the team in assists with five. Richards had four helpers and Solorzano one. Connor Hudyma, Yoakam and Cade Hudyma had one assist a piece.
Cade Hudyma pulled down 12 rebounds and Babb had 11, giving both starters a double-double. Connor Hudyma had seven rebounds, Yoakam four, and Richards and Solorzano three each. Richards, Yoakam, Babb, Cade Hudyma and Solorzano each notched a steal while Babb, Cade Hudyma and Solorzano each knocked down a Fairfield shot attempt.
Glasgow advanced to the semifinal game Friday night where they faced Poplar. The Scotties held tight with the Indians, trailing 21-17 after one and 37-36 at the half. Both teams scored 13 in the third as the Indians maintained their 1-point lead. Poplar outscored Glasgow 21-17 in the final eight minutes to win 71-66.
Babb paced the Scotties with 21 points. Cade Hudyma scored 20 and Richards added 12 points. Yoakam scored 6 from downtown and Solorzano hit one trey on his way to 5 points while Connor Hudyma added a bucket. Babb also led in assists with three followed by Richards, Yoakam, Cade Hudyma and Solorzano with one each.
Richards had five rebounds in leading the Scotties followed by Babb with four and Connor Hudyma and Cade Hudyma, both with three. Yoakam pulled down two boards and Solorzano one. Richards, Yoakam, Cade Hudyma and Solorzano had a takeaway each. Solorzano had a block for the Scottie defense.
The loss moved the Scotties into loser-out play Saturday morning against the Sugarbeeters. Glasgow led 17-15 after one but Chinook scored 20 in the second and held the Scotties to 13 to take a 35-30 lead over Glasgow into the second half. The Scotties fought back to tie it at 44-44 at the end of three and outscored the Sugarbeeters 16-14 in the final eight for the 61-59 win.
Babb poured in 26 points to lead Glasgow, going 8-for-11 at the charity stripe. Cade Hudyma scored 19 followed by Connor Hudyma with 7, Yoakam 6 and Richards 3 points. Connor Hudyma had five assists for the Scotties followed by Solorzano with four and Babb with two helpers. Yoakam, Cade Hudyma and Noah Runner had one assist a piece.
Cade Hudyma pulled down 19 rebounds, giving the freshman his second double-double of the tournament. Babb grabbed five, Solorzano and Connor Hudyma four each, and Yoakam three rebounds. Solorzano had two steals and Yoakam one with Cade Hudyma getting one block in the win.
Glasgow advanced to the Consolation game Saturday night to face Malta in another 2B matchup. The Scotties established a 20-11 in the first quarter but the Mustangs outscored them 21-13 in the second, giving Glasgow a 33-32 lead at the half. Glasgow went on a scoring spree in the third, outpacing the Mustangs 22-7. The Scotties fended off a fourth-quarter surge by the Mustangs, who put up 19 while holding Glasgow to 15 points, as the Scotties claimed third place with a 70-68 victory.
Cade Hudyma led the Scotties, pouring in 28 points, going 10-for-13 at the line. Yoakam hit six from downtown as he put up 19 points and Babb scored 11 in the win. Connor Hudyma added 9 points and Solorzano hit a free throw for Glasgow. Babb led Glasgow with eight assists followed by Yoakam with three. Solorzano, Connor Hudyma and Cade Hudymas had two helpers each.
Cade Hudyma and Babb both hit double-doubles with 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively. Connor Hudyma pulled down five boards, Yoakam three and Solorzano two. Solorzano had two takeaways for the Scotties in their final win of the season.
The win marks the first trophy the Scotties have brought home from a Divisional tournament since 2014, and the first victory over the Mustangs this season. Glasgow finished the season with a 13-12 overall record. The Scotties lose senior Toryn Richards to graduation but will look to return the rest of their roster for the 2024-25 season.
