Another two names have been added to the race for Valley County Commissioner District 1. Russell Dahl filed for the seat last week and Paul Tweten filed to run on Friday. Both are running against Dan Carr. Commission Dave Pippin announced at the end of last year that he would not be running again for his position.

The local Girls Staters for 2014 are Josie Braaten and Amy Breigenzer, of Glasgow. Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary #41.

The 17th annual ice fishing derby hosted by the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture took place on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Dredge Cuts Trout Pond in Fort Peck. David Combs, won the championship and took home $2,000.

Red Rock Plaza has been in the process of remediation and is now looking at a more permanent future. It did create enough of a mess to bring in Shelli Isle of Great Northern Development to seek grants for removing two old tanks and do an environmental site assessment and continue with a sampling and analysis plan. The grant was received and tanks were removed. Monitoring showed that the contamination was local and didn't wander too far from the old site. What some cal the Red Rock Plaza was actually owned by the Magruders. It was a gas station, a car dealership and a shop that sat for many years for Glasgow. It was one of the last stops several people would take on their way out to Fort Peck.

Glasgow secured the No. 1 seed in the District 2B tournament as they won their final two games of the season against Malta and Poplar. In the matchup against Poplar, the Scotties got contributions from four players as they found their way to double digits in scoring; Chase Fossum led the way with 14 points, Lachlan Vaira with 11 and Jake Page and Keil Krumwiede followed suit with 10 points each.

On the girls side of action, Glasgow finished the season strong by beating an over matched Poplar team 53-18. This was a bittersweet night for the Scotties as the faithful were saying their final goodbyes to three Glasgow seniors, Lexis Synan, Haylee Redfield and Megan Rasmusan all played their final game for the Scotties as they are graduating at the end of the school year.

Starting out with a bang. That's exactly how Glasgow wrestling head coach Trevor Newman described the first day of the State Meet in Billings on Friday. "I was pleased that we had four of the five reach the second day of the tournament," Newman said. All of the momentum going into the second day was lost as Glasgow came crashing back, going 0-6 on the day. Kasey Seyfert was able to place sixth in the 113 pound weight class.

Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999

New officers and directors were elected at the annual meeting of Two Rivers Growth on Feb. 22. Debbie Swanson is president, Tod Kasten is vice president and Julie Hallock was retained as secretary-treasurer. The previous officers were Tod Kasten, president, Deb Donovan, vice president and secretary-treasurer Hallock. The new directors are Steve Page and Jim DeWit. Richard Kingsley was re-elected as a director. The other members of the board of directors are Jon Bengochea, Gary Dascher, David Gregory, Patsy Krause, Darlene Otten and Sam Waters.

The principal of the Glasgow Middle School spent Tuesday on the snowy school roof, thanks to his students' passion for reading Janaury was "I Love To Read" Month and Glen Monson told the Student Council they could use him any way they wanted as a reading incentive. They decided on a goal of reading 60,000 pages in January. Monson agreed to spend a day on the roof if they did. That goal was surpassed the first week – the Middle School book worms went on to read an astounding 202,333 pages.

The Hinsdale Raiders sealed up the 3C District Conference title with wins over the Nashua Porcupines and Opheim Vikings. The Raiders finished off their regular season with a record of 16-2 and a conference play record of 15-1. Chris Barstad led the Raiders with 16 points and Chris Strommen added 12. Other Raiders on the board were Cody Palm, 11; Brandon Hoerster 10; Phillips Zurflueh, nine and Josh Palm, four. Leading the Nashua Porcupines with 12 points each were Chris Burns, Ray Bucheit and Tyler Viste.

Starting off the weekend with a game against the Bozeman Stingers, the Ice Dawgs came out playing hard and didn't let up. Tony Winder started the Ice Dawgs off, after being assisted by Jeff Heringer. Later in the first period, Heringer was able to put one in the net after an assist by Levi Sugg. In the second period, the Midgets were able to chalk up three goals while holding the Stingers scoreless. Buck Browning scored unassisted, while Heringer again scored after an assist by Ben Rohde and Rohde put one in after being set up by Heringer and Tim Rodveldt. In the third period, both Browning and Bozeman's Horton scored unassisted leaving the final score 6-2

The Glasgow Elks Lodge has announced local winners of the Elks National Foundation most valuable student competition. Nine students competed locally. The local winners have advanced to the state scholarship competition where seven students will be chosen to represent Montana at the national level. The Glasgow Elks Lodge congratulates the following students: Kris Eklund, Saco High School; Sammy Ferguson, Jennifer Jones, Sanders Shumway, all of Nashua High School, Naomi Davison, Glasgow High School; and Gregory Nelson, Malta High School.

Thursday, Feb. 21, 1974

In the winners' circle at the Men's Bowling Association tournament at El Cor Del Lanes is the winning Sonic Team 3, composed of Pat Caporale, Tom Schmid, Al Levine, Ken Parker and Lee Jones, who chalked up a score of 3,029. All members of the team serve with the 4300 AB Squadron, Glasgow Air Force Base.

Nashua's Porkies open their District 3-C basketball tournament facing the Penguins of Whitewater tonight in Malta. Runner up only to unbeaten Frazer in season action, the Nashua squad includes Jay Allen, Steve Nickels, Joe Phillippi, Doug Tihista, Rick Viste, Mils Warren, Jack Nickels, Duanne Weinmeister, Joe French, Mike Johnson, Mike Heikens, Bennie Calhoun, Daryl Waarvik, Ron Grimsrud and Coach Jack Stevens.

Gayna Reimche wears the Winterfest queen crown during the games downtown in Nashua Saturday. Runners-up for the crown were Linda Buen, Diane McCleery, and Stacy Lund. The queen's brother, Ted, was crown bearer and her niece, Wendy Stearns, carried the bouquet of roses.

Members of the bachelor arts class in Glasgow Senior High School, Randy Blem, Ron Svien, Greg Ames and Ron Hagen, reign as kitchen kings in the home economics department while each takes a hand in making a cherry pie. Under direction of Beatrice Trites, the boys are mostly interested in food skills but they have also asked for tips on laundering and caring for garments. About 80 boys have enrolled in the classes this year.

Class A Mat Title - Saturday night's final action played out before one of the largest crowds in the young history of Glasgow Senior High School gymnasium. It was every ounce the thriller that promised to climax the two-day elimination event. Glasgow got its only state champion when undefeated 112-pounder Les Long decisioned Meagher of Deer Lodge, 13-3.

The FHA sponsored a Sweetheart Valentine's Ball at the High School cafeteria Thursday evening. The room was decorated in the Valentine theme for the occasion. Highlight of the evening was the crowning of the king and queen, Mike Heikens and Cindy Nickels, by Rose Ann Nelson, FHA president. Other candidates were Lori Hill, Lori Skyberg, Maridene Tippets, Lisa Ferguson and David Wallem, Mike Johnson, Ronald Grimsrud and Scott Schrimcher.

Thursday, Feb. 24, 1949

Keeping control of the ball game most of the way, Glasgow Scotties defeated Havre Blue Ponies, 41-37, on the Havre basketball court Saturday night to give the local team leadership of the Montana Big 16. Glasgow B squaders lost to the Havre Colts, 45-30, in the preliminary. For Glasgow, much credit goes to Fred Rantz, who covered Havre's ace, Charlie Goligoski, holding him scoreless and Mick Luckman who controlled both backboards.

Glasgow Scotties, winding up their regular Big 16 basketball schedule with a victory over Havre last week, found themselves in rarified atmosphere – at the top of the Montana Class A league. Thus, if only temporary, the school with the smallest enrollment in the big 16, is leading with a record of nine wins and two losses, and also maintains its record as the outstanding defensive team in the circuit.

The Opheim High School basketbal team gave the Fort Peck fans a sample of the type of play that can be expected from them in the district basketball tournament in Glasgow this weekend when it defeated the Fort Peck high school boys 64 to 21. For Opheim, Wangrud was high with 14, M. St. John 13, L. St. John 10, Anderson 7, Waarvik 6, Zimmer 6, Stolen 6, Walstad, 2, Halverson and Flickinger. For Fort Peck, Catt was high with 9, Keagy 5, Good 2, Guenther 2, Harvey 1, Thielke 1, Livingston 1, Wagner, Simmins, Foster and Whittle.

Four generations of Glasgowans in the male line of descent are Charles G. Putz, 66; his son, Wayne Putz, Sr. 43; Wayne Putz, Jr. 23; and Thomas James Putz, born May 27, 1948. The first Mr. Putz came to Valley County in 1913 and had a store at Beaverton until 1925 when they moved to Glasgow. He was employed by the bureau of reclamation until his retirement last year. Wayne Putz, Sr., is farming west of Glasgow and Wayne Putz, Jr., who served with the navy during the world war, is employed by the Hanson-Mersen company.

Irvin Boehm is now serving as patrolman with the police department and is in charge of parking meters, Chief of Police W.A. Baynham announced. The new patrolman previously filled vacancies in the department while policemen were on vacations and has been a resident of the community for a number of years, the chief of police pointed out. He said that all parking meters are now in operation.

Strong interest in livestock feeding was demonstrated at the Valley County Feeder Tour. Part of the crowd of almost 150 attending lined the fence at Brogan Brothers' ranch southeast of Nashua. Farmers, ranchers, business men and students made up the group. County Agent W.R. Aldworth "broadcasted" on the public address system to explain features at the Brocksmith & Friesen ranch near Nashua.
