The 19th Glasgow Kiwanis Science Fair took place this last week at the East Side School. While projects weren't required, students did get a chance for extra credit and had the chance to advance to the regional Science Fair in Havre. Fourth grade first place went to Kate Parks and Kambria Ross. Second went to Nora Neumiller and Ted Tryan. Third went to Bergen Miller. Fifth grade first place went to Cheyne Iman and Katie Belt. Second went to Hanna Toavs and third went to Mercedes Taylor and Naomi Siverly. Sixth grade first place went to Nicole Lippert and Destiny Bear-Garza. Second place went to Mariah Cathey and third went to Kaylee Ross and Keely Fossum. Seventh grade first place went to Oden Hallock and Garrett Lloyd, followed by Natosha Sand in second place and Ben Miller and Merlin McKean in third.

The Glasgow Train Depot has seen years of weather and use. Tami Burke, administrator for the Tourism Business Improvement District (TBI) and Betty Stone, president of TBID, explained to the city council on Jan. 21 that they were looking at improving the building for the next project. "It's a sore point, it doesn't really portray what we have here in town and isn't a good representation," Burke said. Facilities manager for BNSF was already looking to improve the building when Burke contacted him and showed him photos and a report of the condition of the building.

If you pay the propane man to heat the house you probably feel the pain that came with the price per gallon. Currently Agland in Nashua and Ezzie's West End are charging $2.95 a gallon, compared to $1.85 last year. Prices have skyrocketed all over the state of Montana, with Culbertson and other towns paying around $5 a gallon or more. The cold temperatures that have been felt all over the nation this winter have brought the demand above the supply and households who rely on propane to heat their homes are suffering.

Glasgow wrestling had a nice showing at Divisionals this past weekend as five Scotties qualified for the State meet coming up this weekend in Billings. Kasey Seyfert, Cody King, Tony Kaiser, Kevin Frigon and Tanner Roness all qualified in their respective weight classes.

The Raider boys are leading the 3C with a record of 11-1 (15-1 overall) and the girls are in second place with a 10-2 (14-2 overall) as we head into the final week of conference play. Thirty-two games, combined Raiders and Lady Raisers, with just three losses, that's huge folks! Hinsdale traveled to Dodson last Friday and were surprised when Dodson's Nick Bear presented Hinsdale Head Coach Mitch Capdeville and junior Dallas Capdeville with a star quilt.

The U19 girls are catching fire at the right time. The Ice Dawgs won all three of their games in Missoula over the weekend by a combined score of 31-0 over Glacier, Missoula and Kalispell. Sadie Sukut had six goals in the three games. Goaltender Autumn Gault stopped all 45 shots she saw in the three games. Glasgow is now 14-7-1 on the season as postseason play rapidly approaches.

Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999

Skip Fassett, of Glasgow, was the voter's choice to kiss Porsha the Pig at half-time of the Glasgow-Plentywood game Saturday. Proceeds from the event went to the Close-Up students from Glasgow who are planning a trip to Washington, D.C.

A federal postal official from Great Falls has been called in to investigate the burglary of the Nashua Post Office. According to Sheriff's Deputy Dewey Doucette, the break-in occurred sometime after 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11. Doucette said some locked drawers were pulled out and mail has been tampered with.

Police responded to a call that children were sledding on Cemetery Road Hill. That is the same location where a six-year-old boy was killed in January 1995 when his sled ran under a pickup. Glasgow Chief of Police Lynn Erickson said parents must check the places where their children sled.

The Glasgow Wrestlers had a super state wrestling tournament this past weekend, finishing in fifth place. The wrestlers avenged many losses to opponents that had defeated them over the course of the season. The wrestlers defeated eight wrestlers at state that had beat them previously. The Eastern B-C Divisionals had the second, third, fourth, fifth, seventh, and 10th place teams at the state tournament.

The winner of the $1,000 big fish prize in the Chamber's third annual Ice Fishing Contest at Fort Peck Marina on Saturday was Jim Koessl, with a 4.48 pound Northern Pike.

This past weekend the Glasgow Scotties had two contests. They started off their weekend battles with Friday night games in Sidney against the tough Class A Sidney Eagles. This turned out to be a very well played game for Glasgow, even though they didn't come out with the win. The two seniors, Jeremy Radakovich and Tim Fassett, led the Scotties' charge against Sidney. Fassett played a tough inside game against the bigger Sidney players while Radakovich complemented him with sharp outside shooting.

Scottie Netters Still Undefeated: After coming off a win from Poplar on Thursday night, the varsity fell to the Havre Blue Ponies. The team is however still undefeated in conference play. In the varsity match, Glasgow downed Poplar in three. Leading server was Amy Bell with 16, followed by Lisa Bell with nine, Jessika Hinz, six; Cassie Boos, five; Kodi Malnaa, four; Jessica Ost and Tanya Bergren, three; Renee Smrck and Amanda Waarvik, two; and Krista Markle, one.

Thursday, Feb.14, 1974

Glasgow City Councilmen set the dates for a junk car cleanup campaign, Wednesday night, and is organizing a full-scale war on abandoned autos that litter the city...now the success of beautification project rests where it belongs – with the people of Glasgow and the surrounding area. Mayor Jim Christinson announced to the Council that he had received a phone call from Recycle Contractors of Billings and they had informed him they were sending a contract for their services to the City of Glasgow by mail for signature. The aldermen and the mayor agreed to set a flexible deadline, between April 15 and May 15, for the firm's auto compactor to be in Glasgow.

Glasgow's wrestling Scotties overwhelmed their eastern Class A divisional opposition at Sidney last weekend and now come home this weekend for the final leg of what they hope will be a successful defense of the State Class A mat championship. The divisional champs include Bernie Durell; Rod Archambeault, Les Long, Larry See, Dan George, Rocky Kittleson, Jim Clowes, and Ted See. Eight of the 12 man Scotty crew move into state title matches this weekend.

The decision on whether Highland Cemetery remains solely dependent upon the taxpayers of the City of Glasgow or is handed over to a three-member Public Cemetery District Commission to be funded by county tax levy, may well be determined this year. The cemetery now operates on an annual budget of $35,000, of which approximately $13,000 is subsidized by Glasgow real property owners. Since its inception, Highland has always been a city-cemetery, although accepting an estimated "90 percent" of the burials in Valley County without a dollar of outside budget assistance.

Capturing top prizes in the Valentine baby contest sponsored by the Jayceens are the youngsters and their mothers, Michelle Tade, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Tade; second place winner Corey Hallock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hallock; Robert Virts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Virts, third. The little miss won a life-size doll and the boys each won $10 gift certificates and jeeps. Corey got a $25 Savings Bond. Each of the winners were presented Valentine candy and each of the entrants in the contest got a half gallon of ice cream.

Glasgow's youngest participating hockey squad – the Wee-Pees – are the youngest skaters on the city hockey ice this year. While they do not have a league of their own, the Wee-Pees take part in intramural games and advance to the Tom Thump squad as they improve. The team includes Coach Jon Pidwerbecki, Garrett Gardner, Mike Copenhaver, Eric Simonsen, Coach Al Steiner, Doug Stebleton, Peter Helland, John Gallagher, Kevin Copenhaver and Randy Lasar.

Skaters using the city hockey rink facilities are now required to wear helmets. Glasgow City Councilmen faced the problem of youngsters using the hockey rink at off-times and non-practice nights, accompanied by friends who venture out on the ice with them, risking injury from a hockey puck and decided that everybody on the ice should wear a helmet. Hockey has been banned on all city rinks but the west end ice adjacent to the Junior High to prevent injury to smaller and younger skaters.

Thursday, Feb. 17, 1949

The city of Glasgow is offering a reward of $25 for information leading to identification of vandals who damaged about 50 parking meters in Glasgow Friday night. "Pure vandalism" was the comment of Mayor F. S. McIntyre, who stated that glass fronts had been smashed with some heavy instrument. Meters have all been repaired and are now in working order.

Glasgow High School Scotties continued their winning ways Monday night be defeating the strong Nashua Porcupines, 44-30, on the Civic Center floor. Although the game was in doubt until the final quarter, the Scots managed to keep a substantial lead throughout the game, except the first quarter. The Porkies always were a threat and presented a stronger aggregation than several Class A teams seen on the local floor.

The First National Bank of Hinsdale joined the trend toward modernization this week by removing the grille work dividing the rest of the bank from the lobby and installing a new entrance from the lobby into the main workroom. Ed Johnson has been doing the carpenter work. The new arrangement is expected to be more convenient, easier to keep clean and more pleasant for the public to transact business, bank officials said.

DeDobbeleers' Bisons defeating the Bashinskis, 15-9 cinched first place in a grade school basketball league, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce at the high school. In another contest, a close one, the Bushmans won from the McIntyres, 12-11 The members of the winning team will receive gold basketball emblems provided by the Jaycees, while every boy participating in the grade school basketball program will receive a participation emblem later.

Markle & Watson of Glasgow will be distributors for northeastern Montana of Dow Chemical company products, it was announced here by Owen P. Lavin, of Billings. The northeastern Montana distributors plan to set up dealerships throughout the territory, some with aerial spraying firms, including Valley Flyers. O.E. Markle will be in charge of agricultural chemicals.

The birthdate of Abraham Lincoln was observed in the Montana legislature Saturday when the Montana State college concert band and chorus presented a musical program. Among the more than 100 students participating in the memorial were Guy Wagner, of Glasgow, band member, and Louis Strader, of Glasgow, who sang in the chorus.
