The North Country Mavericks and Lady Mavericks went to Scobey on Saturday, and took on their Spartan counterparts on Feb. 3. It was their second meeting of the 2023-24 season.
The Lady Mavericks were able to defeat the Lady Spartans 47-23, and extended their win-streak to 44 games. The Mavericks fell 71-36 to the Spartans.
In the Lady Mavericks’ win, North Country was led by Paige Wasson, who had 15 points, five steals, and three rebounds. Teagan Erickson had an 11 point, 12 rebound double-double.
Kendall Scheffelmear had eight points, six rebounds, and three steals. Shelbi LaBrie had four points, CharLee McColly had three points. BaiLee McColly and Josie Brown both had two points.
The Lady Mavs only allowed five points in the first half while the team scored 14 points in the first quarter and nine in the second quarter. The Mavericks built their lead in the second half, leading by as much as 30 points in the final minutes of the game.
North Country made 14-of-34 (41.2 percent) of their field goal attempts from two point range, and were 3-of-12 (25 percent) from three point range. The Lady Mavs were 10-of-10 (100 percent) from the free throw line.
Scobey turned the ball over 22 times, and North Country scored 14 points off of those turnovers.
In the boys’ varsity loss to Scobey, Blaine Downing led with 23 points, 15 of which came in the first quarter. Laytin Erickson scored six points, Kade Strommen added four points, Coy Bowman had two points, and Chase Albus had one point.
The Mavericks kept pace with Scobey in the first quarter, scoring 16 to Scobey’s 19. The Spartan defense clamped things up in the final quarters as Scobey outpaced North Country 11-6 in the second quarter, 19-5 in the third quarter, and 22-9 in the fourth quarter.
The Maverick basketball teams are scheduled to play the Lustre Christian Lion basketball teams in Saco on Friday, Feb. 9, starting at 5:30 p.m. They will then travel to Nashua to take on the Porcupine basketball teams on Saturday, Feb. 10, starting at 4 p.m.
