Scotties Knock Down the Eagles

Win 14-0 in Final Home Game of the Regular Season

"We are an excellent team starting to hit full stride in the season when it matters most." Head coach Patrick Barnett summed up the Scottie football team after they earned another win Oct. 13, defeating Fairfield 14-0 at home. Glasgow improved their record to 4-0 in conference play, 4-4 overall and according to activities director Brenner Flaten, clinched the Northern B title for their first conference title in seven years.

The Scotties started the scoring just over halfway through the first quarter when Toryn Richards carried the pigskin five yards into the end zone. Rex Monson added the PAT with a kick through the uprights.

The 7-0 score held through the second half as the Scotties marched themselves backwards on the field with penalties in the second quarter. Glasgow went 1-for-4 in the red zone in the first half.

"Not the efficiency we were hoping for in this one from an offensive standpoint, especially in the Red Zone," offensive coordinator Sam Tedrow told the Courier. "We did a nice job of driving the field, had some really long drives, but we need to punch it in at the end. Thirty yards of penalties in the Red Zone really stalled some drives, but I need to be better with play calls when we are close."

Glasgow cleaned up their penalties in the second half and created more offense, despite losing quarterback Khye Gamas late in the first half. The starter did not return to the field and the Scotties turned to Richards to fill the slot. The senior stepped in for some solid passes to move the Scotties down the field and converted a QB keeper into a 13-yard touchdown, only his forearms and ball making it past the all-important line. Monson added the PAT for a 14-0 hometown lead.

"Props to Fairfield: the gameplanned to take away our outside run game and they really gave us some fits. Proud of our guys in the second half, controlling the clock and getting first downs," Tedrow said. "Toryn really stepped up and made some huge plays for us at quarterback after Khye went down with an injury."

Glasgow racked up 286 net yards on offense, 311 total, with 118 coming on passing and 193 on rushing. Richards was 6-for-10 on passes, gaining 69 yards. Gamas completed 6-of-16 throws in the first half for 49 yards.

Richards also led in rushing with 110 yards on 14 carries. Gamas added 31 yards on five carries before leaving the game and Tatum Hansen advanced Glasgow 63 yards on 21 carries.

Wyatt Babb had 57 yards with 3 three catches. Coy Nelson came down with four passes for 24 yards while Richards made three snags for 20 yards. Dillon Hughes added 12 yards on one catch and Hansen had two yards on one reception.

The offense had one turnover on a fumble loss and went 2-for-5 overall in the Red Zone.

The Scottie defense earned the shut out, just one week after Coach Barnett expressed disappointment over missing it in Conrad. "Each week, as the defensive coordinator, the goal is not to allow any yards or points. So, as the d-coordinator, I was ecstatic about not giving up any points. As the head coach, it was frustrating to see us not be able to score as much as I thought we would have during this game. Players only get a few stats when the defense has a big game, not allowing yards or points. Overall, the defense played outstanding by creating PBUs, INTs, etc., an excellent performance by the D. The defense needs to continue what they are doing, and will make the adjustments on the offense to improve our team."

The Scottie D not only held the Eagles to under 100 yards total offense – 91 yards – they forced the visitors into negative territory in rushing yards: -3 on 17 attempts.

Glasgow had 13 pass break-ups, two interceptions, and six hurries. Babb and Tavin Boland each came down an intended Eagles' reception. Hansen led in PBUs and hurries with three in each column. He also had a sack. Liam Chapman also notched three PBUs followed by Kohl Kittleson and Richards, both with two. Babb, Vaughn Miller and Boland added one a piece. Andrew Linder, Babb and Jaydeen Hanshew notched a hurry a piece.

Miller led in total tackles with seven, four unassisted. Kittleson added five total, unassisted. Chapman had four total tackles followed by Connor Hudyma and Myles Yoakam, both with three. Hanshew and Boland took down two Eagles each while Babb, Kade Strommen and Wyatt Sugg each put a tackle on the books.

Monson had 4 kick off yards with one out of bounds on special teams, and went 2-for-2 on PATs. Richards added 18 yards on the punt and had two fair catches on punt returns. Hansen had three yards on a kickoff return.

In JV action, the Scotties beat Havre 24-8 on the road Oct. 9 and downed Fairfield 26-24 at home Oct. 14. Monday in Malta they shut out the Mustangs, 51-0.

Barnett is holding off on claiming the conference title until after the team's final regular season game. "I would not say we have the conference until after this weekend ... I expect Wolf Point to come out and play, as they have nothing to lose. So we have to play our best game and continue to build on this game if we want to be successful in the playoffs."

Tedrow was also keeping his eyes on the week-to-week, "Big game this week against a Wolf Point squad that beat Conrad this last week. Offensively, we need to make a few adjustments and keep the 1-0 each week, each drive, each play mentality."

Glasgow travels to Wolf Point Friday, Oct. 20, for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The game will be broadcast on KLTZ radio, Nemont TV and the NFHS network.
