The Scottie football team kept their conference momentum flowing on the road Oct. 6 with a 41-6 victory over Conrad, putting a damper on the Cowboys’ homecoming game. Glasgow received the ball first and while they didn’t score on their first possession, they made the most of the remaining five drives in the first half while the Scottie defense owned the field.
By the end of the first 12 minutes, Glasgow had established a 21-0 lead. The Scotties increased their lead 35-0 at the half, scoring on 5-of-6 first half drives.
Quarterback Khye Gamas connected with Tatum Hansen on a 15-yard pass for the first touchdown of the game and Rex Monson added the successful kick. Gamas found Toryn Richards at the end of a 16-yard toss on the next possession, and with Monson’s PAT, Glasgow made it 14-0. An interception returned the ball to Glasgow as Conrad lost one of their leading offensive players to an injury. Hansen carried the pigskin 10 yards converting the Cowboys’ turnover into a Scottie touchdown. Monson put the ball through the uprights for the PAT.
Kade Strommen came down with an intended Cowboys’ pass to start the second and bring the Scottie offense back on the field. After a march down the field, Gamas handed the ball off to Richards who ran it the 5 yards necessary for another score. Monson kept his streak going for a 28-0 lead midway through the second.
Glasgow’s defense continued their domination with a quarterback sack and took their turn on the sidelines as the offense returned to the gridiron for another touchdown. A Richards 14-yard catch and a Monson kick started the running clock as the Scotties carried a 35-0 lead into intermission.
Back on the field, the Glasgow coaching staff turned to their younger players, eager to gain the second stringers experience. Conrad took advantage of the change, coming down with an interception for a 42-yard touchdown run, gaining a short reprieve from the running clock. The Scotties turned the clock back on in the fourth when Liam Chapman came up with a fumble recovery and covered the 50 yards to the end zone. The PAT kicked was blocked but the 41-6 score held through the end of the game.
“Great team win this week,” said offensive coordinator Sam Tedrow. “The defense played out of their minds and set us up offensively with short fields early and often. We talked a lot this week about finishing drives and keeping the pedal down, and our guys responded on the field. Khye had a breakout game throwing the ball and really kept the defense on their toes by keeping the ball on some of our run plays for big gains.”
Gamas went 7-for-11 on passing for 115 yards and had five carries for 56 yards as the Scotties put up 230 net yards offense, 295 total. Wyatt Sugg in at QB in the second half, was 1-for-2 with one interception.
Richards notched 44 rushing yards on 10 carries while Hansen had 41 yards on eight carries, Sugg 38 yards on three carries, Chapman 14 yards on four carries and Trey Graham 2 yards on two carries.
Richards also led in receiving yards with 45 on three catches. Wyatt Babb had one catch for 30 yards, Hansen 15 yards on one reception, Coy Nelson 25 yards on two catches and Chapman one reception for 13 yards. Monson was 6-for-7 on the PAT. Glasgow was 5-for-5 in the red zone.
“Still a lot of work to be done,” Tedrow added. “It may have been the most penalties we’ve had this season. Props to our kids for overcoming a lot of those, but we need to clean up our technique as we head down the stretch. We are in the driver seat and keeping the momentum going in the right direction will be key as we head into senior night with Fairfield.”
On the other side of the ball, head coach and defensive coordinator Patrick Barnett was pleased with his team’s performance, though disappointed the team wasn’t able to secure the shutout. Glasgow held Conrad to 87 total yards of offense, three on rushing and 84 passing. He notes his defense had seven hurries and three interceptions along with three sacks. “The D-line was getting after that quarterback.” Barnett also pointed out that a number of his freshman put stats on the sheet this week.
“I think it was a whole team effort,” he added of the win. “The defense played great. They didn’t score a touchdown [against the Scottie defense].” Barnett also mentioned the number of penalties the Scotties racked up, though radio coverage of the game noted before play the officiating crew is known for throwing laundry on the field.
The Glasgow defensive line turned in another balanced showing with 21 kids on the stats sheet. Monson led in total tackles with four while Strommen, Dillon Hughes and William Kirkland all had three. Connor Hudyma, Elijah Howland, Hansen, Jaydeen Hanshew and Sugg notched two a piece. Andrew Linder, Chapman, Brody Hansen, Kohl Kittleson, Michael King and Gage Waarvik put one total tackle each on the sheet. Linder and Kittleson both had a sack while Babb and Hanshew shared credit on the third. Babb and Sugg had forced fumbles with Linder and Chapman recovering one each. The Scotties had five pass break-ups with three interceptions.
Glasgow now holds a 3-0 conference record, 3-4 overall, with two remaining conference games before the post season. Barnett, who was preparing for this week’s game against Fairfield, noted how much work goes into each week as a coach and from his players. Looking at the Eagles, he said, “It seems like they throw the ball quite a bit. For our conference, everyone’s been throwing the ball a lot with coaching changes … which is different than what those teams have done in the past. Fairfield’s always been pretty balanced but with a new head coach you never know what they like to run or what they’re comfortable with so it’s a different-looking Fairfield.”
Glasgow hosts Fairfield Friday, Oct. 13, for Senior Night. The Scottie seniors will be recognized at 6:45 p.m., prior to the 7 p.m. kick off. The game will be carried on KLTZ radio and the NFHS network.
The Glasgow and Fairfield JV teams will meet Saturday, Oct 14, at 9 a.m. The Scottie JV team also played Oct. 9 in Havre, but the score was unavailable at press time.
