Baker Wins in Lewistown
The Scottie girls cross country team placed seventh at the Fergus Eagle Invitational Cross Country Meet in Lewistown Sept. 15, led by Tanae Baker. Baker won the girls race with a time of 19:57.42. She and her teammates put up 167 points for their placing. The Glasgow boys took ninth with 229 points, paced by Kyler Holinde.
"Obviously Tanae had a HUGE race on Saturday! She was a bit behind the two Hardin girls in Billings but she got right out and competed at the front from the first step. They were back and forth at the mile but she really pulled away on one of the downhills and kept stretching the lead the rest of the way," head coach Tim Phillips said. "Tanae is progressing tremendously both physically and mentally this season – very proud of what she's doing!"
Haleigh Huntsman placed 30th out of 84 runners with a time of 23:09.92 while Kheyerah Bilger ran a 24:19.64 for 42nd place. Riley Evenson-Glasoe took 54th place, completing the course in 25:39.73. Mayzie Yoakam ran a 25:49.24 for 58th with Jensina Tweten close behind her in 60th place at 26:01.61.
Caylen Jankowski, Kimber Dulaney and Mary Dykema competed in the girls JV race. Jankowski ran a season best 25:54.61 to take 11th out of 74 harriers. Dulaney placed 35th at 28:20.09 and Dykema ran a 31:02.91 for 54th place.
"I thought both Riley and Caylen had really good races: most kids were about a minute slower than Billings: Riley was three minues faster! And Caylen ran faster than her Kalispell time and really looked good on Friday," Phillips said. "A lot of our girls struggled a little, but most of that is because we've been sick or still aren't quite in shape yet – or both! Those hilly courses really show your weaknesses – so, even though it was a very tough day, it's a good time of the season to go through that."
Holinde led the boys team with a time of 18:39.47 and a 19th place showing out of 93 runners. Ted See took 45th place with his 20:37.68 performance and Adam Mickelson ran a 21:20.85 for 60th place. Rowen Kloker took 64th place after running a 21:36.00. Owen Thompson ran the hilly course in 22:42.91 for 74th and Drew Simensen turned in a 23:15.98 for 79th place.
Gage Larsen, Timothy Pearson, Tristin Silhan and Vick Overbey ran the boys JV competition. Larsen finished in 24:34.06 for 48th place out of 77 runners. Pearson ran a 24:51.68 for 51st place while Silhan finished in 71st with a time of 29:44.00. Overbey, battling a sore knee, took 75th place at 31:58.65.
"For the boys, Kyler had a good start but lost a little ground in the middle," Phillips said. "But he was only a few seconds slower than his time in Billings so it was still in his range even though he didn't have the legs on Friday. Rowen ran really well, especially for a freshman. Ted was solid too. Tristin started closing the gap with our pack in the first mile, but isn't quite in shape yet to hold it.
"But the real breakout on the day was Drew Simensen. The last 2 weeks we've seen him find his legs in workouts, and he really ran well at Lewistown, cutting 2 minutes off his Billings time, and not far off his personal best. I probably shouldn't have let Vick run 0 he had a sore knee but wanted to try it. He got through it, but it slowed him down a bit. We kept a few others out who are dealing with some minor injuries just to be safe."
Phillips closed, "We'll be in Frazer on Thursday – probably not everyone will run, and we may work on packing it up a bit there. Miles City will be a big meet on Saturday, so hoping we're real competitive when we get down there."
