Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
Glasgow's gridiron struggles continued Sept. 8 as the Scotties dropped a 41-0 contest to the Columbus Cougars at Scottie Field. Columbus owned the game from their first possession – a 92-yard punt return for a touchdown – and never looked back. Glasgow again played with a short roster, one even shorter by the end of the game as starting quarterback Khye Gamas left the game in the second quarter and did not return.
The Cougars scored again in the first and added the PAT to carry a 13-0 lead into the second quarter. They doubled their lead before the half and added another 13 points in the third quarter, scoring just over a minute after teams returned to the field due to a half-hour lightning delay. Columbus added a safety in the final 12 minutes to seal their win.
"As a unit, we struggled to get rolling offensively. We missed a couple of big opportunities to change the momentum of the game and we never recovered," said offensive coordinator Sam Tedrow. "That's on me, we need to take a big step in the right direction next week. Look for some offensive shake ups next week against a tough Manhattan team."
Despite getting shut out and losing the starting QB, Tedrow stressed an offensive highlight for the Scotties, "Toryn [Richards] stepped up and made some big plays in both the run and pass game. He had one of the better catch and runs I've ever seen by going through four Columbus defenders. It was great to get him, and his senior leadership, back on the field."
Richards missed last week's game after sustaining an injury in the Scotties' season opener Aug. 26. He led Glasgow in both rushing and receiving in his return. Richards had 33 yards rushing on eight carries, averaging 4.13 yards per carry. He had all four of Glasgow's receptions, advancing the team 58 yards, averaging 14.5 yards per catch.
Liam Chapman added 25 rushing yards on five carries. Gamas added 1 yard on two carries and Wyatt Sugg, in as backup QB, had four carries for 1 yard with a recovered fumble.
Gamas went 3-for-8 on passes for 45 yards while Sugg was 1-for-4 and 13 yards gain.
The Scotties had a net 77 yards on offense, 92 yards total, after losing 15 to penalties. Glasgow went 0-for-10 on third downs and 0-for-3 on fourth downs.
Defensively, Glasgow gave up 368 net yards to Columbus, 399 total yards. The Cougars gained 266 yards on 37 rushing attempts and went 9-for-14 on passes for 133 yards.
Vaughn Miller led the Scotties in tackles with six total, four unassisted. Richards and Coy Nelson both added four, three unassisted each. Connor Hudyma, Andrew Linder, Kade Strommen and Myles Yoakam added three tackles a piece to the stats sheet while Rex Monson, Kohl Kittleson and William Kirkland put two tackles each up. Gamas, Chapman, Dillon Hughes, Jaydeen Hansehw, Tavin Boland, Sugg, Cade Hudyma, Michael King and James Pearson all had one on the books. Hughs, Kittleson, Hanshew and Ca. Hudyma each had a tackle for loss while Nelson and Kirkland both forced a fumble.
On special teams, Monson had 35 yards net kickoff. Gamas had a punt returned with two other punts at 42 and 30 yards. Brody Hansen had a -15 net punt stat. Gamas put up 6 yards on kick off return, Chapman 21, Hughes 5 and Strommen 5 while Sugg and Kirkland both had fair catches.
Glasgow's JV team was in Sidney Monday. The Scotties defeated the Class A Eagles 34-6 as the young squad gains experience they'll be able to put to use at the varsity level.
The Scotties are on the road this week, traveling to Manhattan to take on the Manhattan Christian Eagles at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KLTZ radio and the NFHS Network.
