Scottie Football Falls in Huntley

The Scotties dropped a 38-6 non-conference football game to the Huntley Project Red Devils Sept. 1 on the road. Glasgow scored once in the second quarter while Huntley Project put up points in all four quarters of play. The Scotties’ record is now 0-2 on the 2023 season.

The Red Devils scored on a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter and added the PAT after a successful kick attempt. Glasgow’s Khye Gamas scored on a 5-yard run after the Scotties recovered a botched Red Devils’ punt. Glasgow’s run attempt for the 2-point conversion failed. The 7-6 score was as close as the Scotties would get to their hosts in the game.

Huntley Project padded their lead to 21-6 by the half, scoring on an 18-yard interception return and successful PAT as well as a 1-yard run and successful kick. By the end of the third, the Red Devils were up 28-6 on a 1-yard run and kick. They added 10 points in the final quarter on a field goal and a 5-yard run plus PAT.

“Our game plan going in was to try and soften up the box with the pass and screen game. Credit to the Huntley secondary: they made some impressive plays that stymied our passing game,” said offensive coordinator Sam Tedrow.

The Scotties 152 net yards of offense, taking 17 yards loss in penalties. Glasgow gained 88 yards rushing and 81 on the passing game.

Gamas went 8-for-21 on passes with four interceptions for a 38 percent completion rate, averaging 3.14 yards per attempt. Wyatt Sugg completed one pass for 15 yards. Liam Chapman led in receiving yards, gaining 32 on one catch. Tavin Boland had one reception for 19 yards, Cade Hudyma added 17 yards on two catches and Kade Strommen advanced the Scotties 13 yards on four receptions. Dillon Hughes had one catch for no gain.

Gamas led in rushing yards, gaining 55 yards on eight carries, averaging 6.88 yards a carry. Hughes also had eight carries, gaining 13 total yards. Sugg advanced 21 yards on a single carry while Strommen put up 4 yards on one carry. Chapman gained 1 yard on five carries.

Defensively, the Scotties gave up 346 yards to the Red Devils: 82 passing and 264 rushing.

Vaugn Miller led the defense, racking up 13 tackles, 11 unassisted, with one interception. Kohl Kittleson added nine takedowns, five solo. Strommen had five unassisted tackles while Coy Nelson had four, five total tackles. Gamas took down four Red Devils alone. Sugg and Jaydeen Hanshew added four total tackles each, both with two unassisted. Hanshew also added a sack to the stats sheet. Connor Hudyama and Chapman had three unassisted tackles each; Hughes, Myles Yoakam and Boland two total tackles a piece, and Trey Graham one takedown.

“The defensive line is one of our strengths on the our football team,” said head coach and defensive coordinator Patrick Barnett. “We make weekly adjustments depending on personnel or what the other team does scheme-wise.”

Rex Monson had 23 yards on kick offs on special teams. Gamas put up 146 yards on four punts. Chapman ran four kick off returns for 44 yards while Gamas had 12 yards on one return and Ethan Engstrom added 26 yards on a single return. Gamas had 6 yards on one punt return.

“Proud of our younger guys stepping in and taking over starting spots for our injured guys,” Tedrow said. The Scotties went into Huntley down five potential starters and suited up only 27 of the 36 players on the roster. “A lot to learn from on film that will improve our depth and prepares us for later in the season.”

Barnett added, “We are down a lot of good players right now, and we hope they recover quickly and return to the field. This also gives a lot of opportunities to younger guys to get on the field and get experience.”

The Glasgow JV team hosted Malta Monday where they lost in the waning seconds of the game. Malta intercepted two Glasgow passes in the first quarter but the game stood scoreless at the end of the opening quarter. The Mustangs scored with 6:16 remaining in the first half and tacked on two more points with a successful run. The Scotties cut the lead at 3:08 when Trey Graham evaded the defense for a long run downfield and a Glasgow touchdown. The 2 point attempt was stopped and the 8-6 scor held until the second half.

Glasgow took the lead at 9:37 on a quarterback keeper. Wyatt Sugg gave the Scotties a 12-8 lead but the 2 point attempt failed. The game saw lots of back-and-forth action for the next nine-and-a-half minutes. The Mustangs scored a quarterback keeper of their own with 6.2 seconds left on the clock. Glasgow stopped the 2-point run, but were unable to advance the ball far enough to regain the lead in as the clock ran down. The JV team travels to Sidney Monday, Sept. 11, to take on the Eagles.

The Scotties host the Columbus Cougars Friday, Sept. 8, with a 7 p.m. kick off. Barnett said, “In the past, Columbus spreads the ball out on offense and throws the ball more than we have seen the previous two weeks. They have some athletes that we will need to keep a close eye on defensively. Offensively, we need to move the ball, get first downs and score. We hope some players return this week but that is uncertain now.”
