North Country Volleyball

The North Country volleyball team dropped a match against the Plentywood Wildcats Sept. 1 in Saco before rebounding to take second place at the Chinook Invitational the following day.

Head coach Charlene Wasson said about the Plentywood match, “Lack of communication and attacking out hits hard plus a few kids having a rough serving night led to a defeat at home against a rival league opponent.” The Mavericks lost 22-25, 25-16,25-15, 19-25, 7-15.

North Country went 3-1 in pool play at the Chinook Invitational before moving on to the single elimination portion of the tournament. Pool play consisted of one set played to 25 points while tourney play was two sets to 25 points, with the team scoring the most total points advancing.

The Mavericks defeated Malta 25-19 before falling to Shelby 22-25. They came back with wins over Highwood, 25-8, and Conrad, 25-8.

North Country defeated Cut Bank 25-21, 25-15 to open tournament play. They then down Roy/Winifred 25-21, 25-15 to advance to the championship game. The home team Sugarbeaters beat the Mavericks in the title match 21-25, 21-25.

Coach Wasson said, “Better reaction time on defense and our passing on serve receive helped propel us into the Championship game.”

North Country hosts the Harlem Wildcats in Whitewater Thursday, Sept. 7, with games beginning at 5 p.m. They take on the Scobey Spartans Friday, Sept. 8, with play beginning at 1 p.m. in Hinsdale.
