Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
The Montana Newspaper Association (MNA) held their annual convention on June 17 and 18 in Helena, Mont., where a variety of representatives of Montana newspapers gathered, socialized and recognized each other for their work.
The convention concluded with the MNA announcing the winners of the 2023 Better Newspaper Contest. This contest is the MNA's way of thanking the hardworking processionals in the newspaper industry and highlighting their successes and efforts.
The Glasgow Courier was recognized in a variety of categories including placing first in Best Portrait Photo, Best Feature Photo, Mark Henckel Outdoor Writing Award and Best Headline Writing. All four first place awards were presented to Publisher Michelle Bigelbach at the convention on behalf of Sports Editor Gwendolyne Honrud.
The Best Portrait Photo was Honrud's photo of Alyssa Toce Blount (photo at right) a then senior at Frazer High School, with her face covered by a red hand print prior to her race at the 53rd Annual Frazer invitational cross country meet on Oct. 4. The print was to draw attention to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons movement.
The Best Feature Photo was Honrud's coverage of Frazer's annual Red Bottom Celebration on June 17 through 19, 2022. "This group of feature photos were spectacular! The award winners this time around were chosen based on sharp quality, perfect lighting and outstanding composition. Top-notch feature photos are like the icing on cake when it comes to a complete story package. Well done everyone!," stated a contest judge, who was from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association.
Honrud also brought home the Mark Henckel Outdoor Writing Award for her Hi-Line Hunt story series and first place in Best Headline Writing for the headline in the Ice Dawgs Give Bighorns H-E- (Double Hockey Sticks) on Ice story that was published in March 2022. Though the award was presented to Honrud, Design/Layout Terry Trang also contributed to making the headline possible.
Michelle Bigelbach placed second in Best General News Photo for her coverage of Glasgow High School's production of Freaky Friday. "These were certainly the Top Three Best News Photos for this division. All visually displayed their stories and I wanted to read more about it in the accompanying stories. Kudos to these outstanding photojournalists!," stated a contest judge.
The Glasgow Courier as a staff placed third in Best Sponsor Page and Honrud also took third place in Best Portrait Photo for her Red Bottom Celebration coverage and Best Feature Photo for the Milk River catfish Dave George and Candy Lagerquist reeled in during the 23rd Annual Catfish Classic June 4.
The Glasgow Courier staff also placed third in Best Page Layout and Design for our 2022 Scottie Homecoming photo spread.
The Glasgow Courier would like to thank the community for their support. We, as a staff, could not put out a paper week after week or have won these awards without the support and the stories that need to be told.
