The Lustre Christian boys track team scored 40 points at the MHSA Class C State track meet in Laurel this past weekend to earn fourth place. The Lions had five podium appearances with three first-place medals and five new personal records.
The 4x100 relay team was first to top the podium. Terran Joseph, Johnslee Pierre, Braden Ewing and Jasiah Hambira took first with a time of 43.85, nearly a full second than their prior best time of 44.83 at the Norm Girard North/East Top 10 Meet in Glasgow May 2. The team came in 0.44 seconds faster than the second-place squad in Laurel and scored 10 points. The Lions ran a 45.03 in the prelims to enter the finals in fourth place.
Hambira set a personal record in the high jump, winning the State event after clearing 6'6 to score 10 team points. His previous best was 6'5, set at the District 3C meet in Glasgow May 13.
Pierre also scored 10 points for the Lions after winning the 300m hurdles. Pierre knocked 2.34 seconds off his previous best time from the Top 10 meet, winning his medal with a 39.98 time.
Pierre and Hambira also put up points for a spot on the podium in the triple jump. Pierre took fourth and scored 4 team points with a personal best distance of 43-08.00 while Hambira scored 1 point in sixth place with a 42-08.00 distance. Ewing just missed the podium, taking seventh place with an individual record 42-02.25 jump.
Hambira, Pierre and Joseph competed in the long jump as well. Hambira jumped 19-08.00 for 10th place followed by Pierre in 12th with a 19-06.50 jump. Joseph came in 29th with a 17-7.25 jump.
Hambira scored the team's remaining points in running events. He put up 4 points with a fourth-place showing in the 400 meters after running a 51.81 and scored 1 point in the 200 meters with a time of 23.70 and a sixth-place finish. He ran a 23.25 in the 200 meters prelims to qualify for the finals. Joseph ran a 24.00 for 17th and Ewing took 18th at 24.13 in the prelims. Jospeh tied for 18th in the 100 meter prelims with an 11.82 time.
Diek Olfert set a personal record in the 800 meters, taking 22nd place at 2:18.55.
