Scottie Boys Take Fifth at State, Girls Finish Twelfth

Smith Earns All-State

The Scottie boys posted a team score of 685, 109 over par, at the 2023 MHSA Class B State Golf Championship held May 16 and 17 in Shelby. Glasgow's girls team shot a 994, 418 over par, to finish in 12th place.

Riley Smith paced the boys team with a 159 and eighth place. He earned his third All State finish, earning him a spot in Glasgow School history as he joins Dale Squires (1979-81) as the only two three-time All State Scottie golfers. Laynee Simpson led the girls team, shooting a 225 and finishing in 41st place.

The Scottie boys sat in eighth place after day one of the competition,shooting 66 over par on the first 18 holes. Glasgow dropped 23 strokes on day two, finishing the second 18 holes 43 strokes over par. The Glasgow girls maintained their twelfth place position from day one to day two, dropping 24 strokes off their game. The Scotties shot 221 over on Tuesday while improving to a 197 over on day two.

BOYS

Smith shot an 85 on the first day of the championship, hitting a 40 on the front nine and 45 on the back nine. He hit two bogeys and six pars on the front while notching a birdie, three pars and two bogeys on the back nine.

Eli Feezell shot a 43 on the front and back for an 86. He put up two pars and seven bogeys out with a birdie, two pars and four bogeys back in. Keigan Ingram put up a 42 on the front and a 44 on the back nine for an 86 also on the first day. He shot four pars on each with four bogeys out and three in.

Connor Koski shot a 51 out and improved to a 46 in for day one 97 score. He had one par and three bogeys on the front with two pars and five bogeys on the back nine. Carter Hoerster scored a 52 on the front and 48 on the back for a 100. He notched four bogeys out and six back in.

On Wednesday, the boys hit the links looking for improvement and found it. As a team, the Scotties shot a 331, the lowest score of the year. The low score was also the best in Head Coach Todd Truscott's multi-school 14-year career.

Smith dropped his score to a 74, shooting a 38 out and a 36 for par on the way back in. He scored five pars with two bogeys on the front while putting up an eagle, six pars and two bogeys on the back nine. He dropped 11 strokes from his first-day score.

Feezell dropped three strokes from the first day, putting up an 80 on a front 39 and a 41 on the back nine. Heading out, he scored a birdie, three pars and four bogeys. Closing out the 18, he put up five pars and three bogeys. Feezell finished in a three-way tie for 17th place.

Ingram shot a 47 on the front, dropping to a 43 on the back nine for a 90 day-two score. He hit two pars with three bogeys heading out with two pars with seven bogeys returning to the club house. Ingram tied for 34th place. Koski, who placed 49th, shot an 87, 10 strokes lower than his first day showing. He shot three pars and five bogeys out while putting up a birdie and seven bogeys in. Hoerster dropped six strokes from the first day to put up a 94. He shot a 51 out and a 43 in, his best showing of the season. He hit a par and three bogeys out with three pars and five bogeys in. Hoerster ended in a three-way tie for 57th place.

GIRLS

Simpson shot a 113 on day one, hitting a 58 out and dropping to a 55 in to start the tournament. She hit three bogeys on the front with one par and two bogeys on the back nine.

Alli Palm shot a 57 and a 64 for a day one 121 score. She scored two bogeys out. Mia Peterson shot a 127 with a 63 out and a 64 in. She recorded one bogey on the first nine. Annika Smith shot a 148 with an 80 before dropping to a 68 in.

Simpson dropped a stroke from her score on the second day, shooting a 112. She notched a par in her 58 first round while hitting an eagle and three bogeys on the back nine for a 54 to finish in 41st place. Palm turned in a 119 on day two, two strokes better. After a par and a bogey out for a 67, she improved to a 52 in with two pars and one bogey. Palm took 54th place.

Peterson finished in 60th place after putting up a 124 on day two, a three-stroke improvement. She shot a 62 in and out, hitting one par and one bogey on the front with one bogey on the back nine. A. Smith dropped 18 strokes off her game by scoring a 65 in and out on day two for a 130. She tied for 67th place.

Coach Truscott loses seniors R. Smith, Ingram and Koski this season. He returns Feezell and Hoerster next year along with some JV golfers who put in time on the greens this year for the boys. Coach Truscott will return all of his girls team next year, losing no one to graduation. He looks to add newly eligible girls to the team next season to continue to grow girls golf in Glasgow.
