The Scottie boys golf team claimed the top slot at the Division 1 Golf Meet in Shelby May 9. The first-place trophy marked the first earned by a Glasgow team in 45 years.
Glasgow won the Division 1 meet by eight strokes, going 53 over par as a team. Cut Bank claimed second at 61 over, followed by Malta, 102; Conrad, 103; Fairfield, 104; Choteau, 112; Poplar, 125, and Shelby, 135. Harlem and Wolf Point did not post team scores.
The Scottie girls finished in fourth, shooting 221 over par. They came in behind Shelby, 111; Malta, 138, and Fairfield, 148. Choteau, Conrad and Cut Bank did not post team scores.
Riley Smith, Keigan Ingram, Eli Feezell, Carter Hoerster and Connor Koski represented the Scottie boys team at State in Shelby May 16 and 17 while Allie Palm, Laynee Simpson, Mia Peterson and Annika Smith competed for the Glasgow girls. Results from the meet were unavailable at press time.
R. Smith powered the Scottie boys to their historic victory with a score of 77 on the Marias Valley Golf par 72 course. The senior shot par on five holes on the front nine with three bogeys and one triple bogey, going seven over par. He shot a 35 on the back nine, one under par, with one bogey, six pars and two birdies.
Glasgow now has two individual divisional winners in school history. Feezell won the title last season.
Ingram shot an 81 to take second place. He turned in a 41 on the front nine and improved by a stroke on the back. The senior shot four bogeys, three pars and one birdie on the front nine, with one double bogey, while turning in a birdie, three pars and five bogeys on the back nine.
Feezell also finished in the top ten, taking seventh with an 86. The Glasgow junior split his score, shooting a 43 on both the front and back nine. He shot two double bogeys, four bogeys, two pars and a birdie on the front while finishing the back nine with one double bogey, five bogeys and three pars.
R. Smith, Ingram and Feezell earned individual All-Conference honors for their finishes.
Hoerster shot a 97 to round out the Scottie boys' scoring. He turned in a 48 on the front and a 49 on the back nine. Hoerster had seven bogeys in the first round with two doubles, while turning in two pars and three bogeys in the final nine holes.
Koski shot a 100 on the Marias Valley course. The senior shot a 49 on the front and a 51 on the back nine. He hit one par and five bogeys in the first round with four bogeys in the final round of competition.
Head Coach Todd Truscott told the Courier, "Myself and Coach [Joel] Smith are so proud of these boys! Dealing with the weather and slow start to the season and then the countless hours of work to finally achieve our goal of Divisional Championship! But the work doesn't stop here. We have bigger goals when it comes to State!"
In girls competition, Palm led the Scotties with a 121 score, shooting a 60 on the front and a 61 on the back nine. Palm had four bogeys in the tournament, three in the opening round and one in the second.
Simpson was right behind Palm, tying for 17th place with a 122 score. Peterson had three bogeys, one in the first round and two in the second. She improved her score from a 65 on the front nine to a 57 on the back nine.
Peterson finished in 20th place after dropping four strokes off her score from the first to second rounds. She shot a 66 with one bogey on the front and a 62 with two bogeys on the back nine.
A. Smith took 22nd place with a 138, splitting her score evenly between the front and back nine. She hit a par and a bogey on the front and one bogey on the back nine.
"Our girls have worked so hard and for them to take fourth and go to State shows how hard they have worked. They are getting better with every swing," Truscott said.
Results from the State B Golf Championship will appear in next week's Courier.
