NFU Focus On Mental Health Awareness Month

The suicide rate among farmers is over three times higher than that of the general population, according to the National Rural Health Association. Too many in our community carry their mental burdens alone, as rural areas across the U.S. lack access to mental health care.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, NFU acknowledges the very real mental health crisis plaguing farm communities. We acknowledge that to ask for support in times of emotional struggle is a sign of strength necessary to continue providing for others into the future. We acknowledge that this is a crisis of failing systems, not failing people.

On social media this month, we will discuss Farmers Union’s efforts to implement material solutions to the mental health crisis, at the national policy level and within states and communities.

If you need of someone to talk to, we encourage you to call the suicide hotline at 988 or Farm Aid’s hotline at 1-800-FARM-AID.
