Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Sheriff Boyer Attends National Sheriff's Institute Jail Administration Course

During the week of April 17-21, 2023, Sheriff Tom Boyer was invited, through a collaboration with the National Sheriff's Institute, Small and Rural Law Enforcement Executive Association, and the National Institute of Corrections, to attend the National Sheriff's Institute Jail Administration Course. The course was held at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. The collaboration between these agencies allowed for the sheriff's attendance without cost.

Twenty-three sheriffs from across the United States attended this training in Virginia. Opportunities to become acquainted with each other and learn from each other enhanced the training that was focused on leadership principles specifically associated with detention centers. Managing these facilities and mitigating liabilities or loss from incorrectly running a detention center is of immense importance. Legal implications pertaining to every decision made in a jail setting, constitute the importance of ongoing training and working with peers in the profession for the sharing of information and formulating ideas for renewed focus on better serving the arrestee population and providing a safe community.

Sheriff Boyer states, "Attending this training at the FBI Academy was definitely a highlight, while working with Sheriff's and exemplary leaders who have worked in the profession of Jail Administration provided me an opportunity to examine our daily routines at the Valley County Detention Center and assess how my leadership can be enhanced to provide a safe and secure facility for the future."

The Jail Administrator course concluded with a graduation ceremony that included closing remarks from the mentor Sheriff Jim Skinner, of Collin County Texas.
