Scottie Girls Place Third at 2B District Tourney

Glasgow's girls basketball team went into the District 2B Tournament in Malta as the fourth seed and emerged with a third-place finish. The Scotties advance to the Northern B Divisional Tournament in Glasgow this weekend.

Glasgow defeated Harlem 49-32 in the opening round before losing 70-26 to the Malta M-ettes Friday night. The Scotties rebounded from the loss to defeat Poplar 61-46 in the consolation game Saturday night.

Thursday afternoon Glasgow leapt out to a 19-4 lead after one against the Wildcats. Both teams put up 15 in the second for a 34-19 Scottie lead at the half. A slow third quarter saw Harlem outpace Glasgow 5-3. The Scotties held the Wildcats to 8 in the fourth while adding 12 to their side of the scoreboard.

Carly Nelson led Glasgow with 12 points, hitting 4-of-4 free throws. Joely Chappell hit for 11 with a three-pointer. Tatum Nyquist and Daley Aune both added 7, with Nyquist hitting 1-of-2 bonus shots and Aune sinking 7-of-8 at the line. Brielle Partridge and Mayzie Yoakam both added 5 with Partridge hitting a trey and Yoakam sinking 3-of-4 free throws. Tanae Baker added a basket. Glasgow shot 75 percent from the free throw line.

The Scotties had 13 fouls, four in the second half, while Harlem drew 15 calls, seven after intermission. Baker was called for four while Nelson drew three calls. Partridge and Aune both had two fouls while Nyquist and Kyndal Schraner had one each.

The win pitted the Scotties against the M-ettes, who won both regular season games.

Malta established a 20-12 lead in the first and outscored Glasgow 19-10 in the second. The Scotties were held to a single bucket in the third while Malta scored 12 points. Glasgow was again outpaced in the fourth, 19-3.

Yoakam led Glasgow with 10 points, hitting a three-pointer and 3-of-3 free throws. Aune scored 9 with a free throw. Nyquist added 3, also with a bonus shot, and Nelson hit a field goal. Chappell and Schraner sank a free throw each. Glasgow shot 63.6 percent at the line.

Malta had 12 fouls, four after intermission, while Glasgow held theirs to 10, six after the break. Baker drew three fouls while Chappell and Nelson both had two infractions. Partridge, Nyquist and Yoakam drew a whistle a piece.

The Scotties faced Poplar in the Consolation game Saturday night, winning by 15 points.

Glasgow led 18-6 at the end of one and outscored the Indians 17-12 in the second. Glasgow put up another 17 in the third while Poplar surged with 18. The Scotties were outscored again in the final eight minutes, 10-9, but Poplar was unable to erase the deficit.

Nelson led the Scotties again, scoring 19 with a 7-for-8 showing at the line. Aune added 15 with a 5-for-6 free throw performance. Chappell scored 12, hitting 4-of-7 free throws and Yoakam hit for 8 with 4-of-4 bonus shots. Partridge scored 4, Nyquist 2 and Schraner 2 point. Glasgow shot 70 percent at the line.

Poplar was called for 25 fouls, giving Glasgow 30 bonus shots, while the Scotties had 17 fouls, giving the Indians 24 attempts at the line where they hit 41.7 percent.

Nyquist had four fouls while Partridge and Nelson had three each. Chappell, Yoakam and Aune each drew two whistles while Baker had one infraction.

Glasgow faces Conrad in the opening round of the Northern B Tournament Thursday, Feb. 23, at 2:30 p.m. in the Scottie Gymnasium. Malta faces Choteau at 1 p.m. in the opening game. Wolf Point takes on Fairfield at 6:30 p.m. Poplar tips off against Shelby at 8 p.m.

The tournament runs Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 23-25, in Glasgow.
