NC Girls 8-0 in Conference

The North Country girls basketball team continued their perfect season with wins over Glasgow and Scobey this past week. The Mavericks took a 45-19 non-conference win in Glasgow Thursday and downed conference rival Scobey 46-21 in Whitewater the following night. North Country holds an 8-0, 16-0 overall record heading into the final week of the regular season.

The Mavericks rolled to 10-0 lead after one and a 21-0 lead at halftime in Glasgow, finding their toughest opposition in an unfriendly rim. Glasgow found the net in the third with 5 but North Country put up 10 points for a 31-5 lead heading into the final quarter. Both teams hit for 14 in the last eight minutes of play.

Paige Wasson led the Mavericks with 10 points, eight rebounds and six steals while Teagan Erickson added 9 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Kora LaBrie posted 8 points and eight steals. Kendall Scheffelmear and Mattea McColly both hit for 6 points while Sammie Wisher, Jessa Erickson and Josie Brown hit a bucket each. The Mavericks hit just 23.1 percent from the free throw line.

Glasgow was called for 12 fouls, five in the second half, while North Country held their infractions to seven, three after the break. Cienna Strommen, Scheffelmear, McColly, T. Erickson, Wasson, Berkley Hillman and Brown drew one whistle a piece.

Friday night in Whitewater, Wasson again led the Mavericks, putting up 16 points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. T. Erickson had 8 points, seven rebounds, two assists and four steals. Shelbi LaBrie added 7 points with two assist while K. LaBrie had 7 points and three rebounds.

"Lady Mavericks had a great weekend battling through two physical games. Our girls have come so far in their ability to play through physicality and I am proud of them for that. I thought our defense was very solid both in our man and our zone," said head coach Amber Erickson. "Everyone is stepping up and continuing to contribute in so many ways which is exactly what we need at this point in the season as we get ready to close out the regular season and head into tournaments."

The Mavericks close out the regular season with two conference games this week. The Mavericks travel to Lustre Friday, Feb. 10. The girls and boys JV teams will play half-games at 4 and 5 p.m., respectively. The girls varsity game begins at 6 p.m. with the boys varsity game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. North Country hosts the Frazer Bearcubs in Saco Saturday, Feb. 12. The girls varsity teams tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
