Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
LeRoy William Canen was born to Lloyd and Dorothy Canen on Jan. 27, 1945, in Sacramento, Calif., where his father was stationed with the military. After a long battle with dementia, LeRoy entered his Lord and Savior's arms on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, at the Wibaux County Nursing Home in Wibaux, Mont.
LeRoy was the second of seven siblings and grew up with his family on the family farm in Glasgow, Mont., graduating from Glasgow High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed at Fort Ord, in California. While there, he went to meet his long-time pen pal, Carolin Gazaway, in Madera, Calif. It wasn't long before he and Carolin were married on July 31, 1965. LeRoy left the army to be home with his wife and two children, Lisa and Robert. He worked at Moore Business Forms, in Visalia, Calif., for many years before moving back to Glasgow. There, he drove school and activity bus and helped with odd jobs for his friends and church. LeRoy and Carolin moved to Hamilton, Mont., in the early 2000s to be closer to their daughter and her family. In 2020, LeRoy's dementia and health were getting the best of him, and he was moved to the Wibaux County Nursing Home.
LeRoy was an accomplished woodworker and gardener. He loved to talk, and he never met a person he didn't talk to. He shared his love for the San Francisco 49ers with his son and gardening with his daughter. His faith in Jesus Christ, church, and family were most important to him. He always enjoyed attending hymn sings at church.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Dorothy; one brother, Robert; and two infant grandsons.
He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Carolin; daughter Lisa (Jack) Stanford, Darby, Mont .; son Robert (Keylee) Canen, Glendive, Mont .; nine grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren plus one on the way, all residing in Montana. He also leaves behind siblings, Beverly Hancock, Roger Canen, John (Gina) Canen, May (Tim) O'Hara, and Diana (Robert) Maddox.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m., at the Daly-Leach Memorial Chapel, in Hamilton. A graveside service took place at the Riverview Cemetery immediately following the service.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Wibaux County Nursing Home for the excellent care they gave LeRoy the past two years.
