Scottie Wrestlers Close Out Regular Season

The Glasgow wrestlers closed out their regular season with three events last week. The Scotties won their Senior Night Dual against the Dawson County Red Devils 44-16 last Tuesday at home. They went 19-9 at the Malta Mixer Friday night with the boys posting a 15-5 record while the girls went 4-4. Glasgow was back in Malta Saturday for the Malta Invitational where the boys took second with 178.5 points and the girls took third with 54 points.

Khye Gamas, Mason Donaldson and Riley Clampitt won individual titles at the Invitational. Gamas won the boys 138 lbs. and Donaldson took top spot in the boys 170 lbs. Clampitt prevailed in the girls 152 lbs.

Kaylly Turner took fourth in the girls 107 lbs., Blake Ozark placed second at 138 and Madison Lamb claimed third at 152 lbs.

Cody Kuka placed second in the boys 103 lbs., and Makiya Plummer fourth in the same class. Ted See took second and Cash Richardson third at 120 lbs. Jack Cornwell placed fourth at 145 lbs. while Michael King came in second at 160 lbs. Jaydeen Hanshew and Mo Fast placed third at 182 lbs. and 285 lbs., respectively.

Glasgow heads into the Eastern B/C Divisional Tournament in Columbus this weekend with the boys ranked fifth in the state for B teams. Kuka is ranked third in 103 lbs. and Gamas is ranked third at 138 lbs. William Kirkland, at 145 lbs., is ranked fifth. Donaldson sits in sixth at 170 lbs. and Mo Fast, at 285 lbs., earned a third place ranking.

"Good, good," said head coach Jory Casterline when asked about he feels heading into the postseason. He noted his team is not facing any major injuries and his grapplers are peaking at just the time they need to.

Casterline however knows his athletes will have to perform at the Divisional Tournament to move on to State. A new allotment system will determine which wrestlers from each division move on to the hallowed event at the Metra in Billings.

"The boys need to be hitting the top six," he said. For the first time, girls will have to earn their trip to state now that enough schools have fielded the numbers necessary to make the cut. Casterline believes members of the Glasgow girls team will have to be sitting in the top two or three spots to move on to the next level.

On the girls side, the Scotties have faced a number of illnesses and injuries throughout the season, as well as a lack of opponents at duals. Despite the challenges, Casterline says the girls are wrestling well, especially for a young squad. He highlighted the need for consistency and mat time, both in practice and in competition but noted he has seen a lot from the girls, pointing out Clampitt's win at the Bismarck Rotary and Madison Lamb's strong season as an eighth grader. Turner, Ozark and Avery Pedersen have also gained valuable experience this season as they look to grow the girls high school wrestling program.

On the boys' side of action, Casterline is looking for a number of his wrestlers to come out strong and compete in Columbus. His senior wrestlers are sitting strong heading into the postseason.

Fast, back from a knee injury and a related setback over the holidays, has been getting in the matches he needs. His coach highlighted that Fast has only one loss on the season so far.

Casterline is looking for Donaldson to compete hard the next two weeks, noting the senior has the talent and the capability to place high at state. Donaldson just missed placing at last year's state tournament at 152 lbs.

Jack Cornwell is "turning it up, closing out his senior season" noted Casterline. The Scottie coach noted Cornwell has turned in some tight, tough matches against top-ranked wrestlers. Cornwell, at 145 lbs., is in the same weight class as ranked fellow Scottie, Kirkland, and Glasgow's coach is hoping the two will not have to face each other at the Divisional meet.

Looking to his younger wrestlers, Casterline said of Kuka, "He's capable of placing at state." Kuka has wrestled hard against other ranked wrestlers in his weight class and "he's getting better every weekend. All of our eighth-graders are" according to the coach.

Of third-ranked Kirkland, Casterline said he's "turning the corner ... great season ... " Kirkland hit his maximum number of matches this season and had to give up a match this past weekend but Casterline does not expect that to slow hime down.

Looking at Gamas, who rolled through his middle school wrestling career, Casterline said, "It took a couple weeks to adjust [to the high school level] but he's a kid who could win a state championship. He has beat some really tough guys."

King, who went 2-2 at last year's state tournament at 145 lbs., is "growing into his weight class [160 lbs. this season]. He's matured over the season." Casterline also said, "He can beat anybody ..."

Hanshew joined the team in the last few weeks and has been wrestling at different weight classes. He started at 205 but Casterline is looking to put him in the 182 lb. class in the postseason. The Coach noted Hanshew has wrestled his whole life and Casterline is happy to have him back on the mats this season.

Casterline also had praise for Plummer, See, Richardson Joaquin Torres and Rhett Eklund. "See and [Richardson] should have a good Divisional ..." said the coach, while noting he may have to make tough decisions as to who hits the mats postseason as he has a limited number of entries at each weight class. "Torres and Eklund are both improving and that's what we look for."

Even if each wrestler does not find success in this year's postseason, Casterline is looking for great things from them as their high school careers continue.
