Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Valley County Sheriff's Office Celebrates 130 Years

Feb. 6, 2023, marks the 130-year anniversary of the Valley County Sheriff's Office. To celebrate, a new shoulder patch was created that symbolizes the identity of Valley County.

In 1893 Valley County was created out of Dawson County and included everything north of the Missouri River to Canada, and from the North Dakota border to a point west of Malta. This same year a courthouse and jail were built in Glasgow.

The first appointed Sheriff was James Deegan. Various portions of the rather large county were sectioned off into other counties, Sheridan, Phillips, and Roosevelt. In 1920 Daniels County was created leaving Valley County at its present size of 5,064 square miles. There has been a total of 30 Sheriffs in Valley County since 1893 and since 1920, 103 years at this current size, there have been 19 elected or appointed Sheriffs.

To commemorate 130 years of the Sheriff's Office in Valley County, this new patch shows off the following identifiers of our unique history:

1) Cattle Ranching and open prairie.

2) Golden fields of grain and farming.

3) History of two different Air Force bases and the T-33 Jet from St. Marie.

4) Blue Skies and Big Sky County.

5) A rich history of buffalo roaming the county side.

6) Shaped as an arrowhead for the extensive Native American history.

7) 1893 to commemorate the creation of the Sheriff's Office in Valley County.

The previous Valley County Sheriff's Office patches incorporated the Montana State Seal in the center and either said Valley County Sheriff's Dept. or more currently Valley County Sheriff's Office.

We hope you enjoy the new patch.
