NC Girls Win Two More Games

The North Country girls basketball team's record remains unblemished following two more wins for the Mavericks this past week. North Country rolled to a 63-26 win over the Dodson Coyotes Jan. 20 for another conference win on the road. The Mavericks defeated the Circle Wildcats 58-31 in Hinsdale the following night. North Country holds on to the top spot in the district with a 6-0 record, 13-0 overall.

As a team, the Mavericks had 23 offensive rebounds and 17 assists against the Coyotes. Paige Wasson paved the way for North Country with 24 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals. Teagan Erickson added 12 points and six rebounds while Kora LaBrie hit for 7 points and five assists.

In Hinsdale, North Country had 11 offensive rebounds, 18 assists and 15 steals. Wasson put up 23 points, six rebounds and six steals for the Mavericks. Erickson connected for 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Kendall Scheffelmear scored 8 points and had three assists.

Head coach Amber Erickson said it was another fun weekend for her team, playing Circle for Senior Night in Hinsdale. She noted Circle is one of the top teams in District 1C and is a solid team with size, quickness and physical play. "I was happy with how the girls handled the physicality of the game and the aggressive man pressure. They held their composure the entire game and did so many things well on both ends of the floor. I love the way they executed offensively and defended [Circle's] strong offensive players."

With just a few weeks left in the regular season, Coach Erickson feels good about how her team looks. "I feel we are getting better every week and the girls are working hard and having so much fun playing together."

The Mavericks have a lone game on the calendar this week, traveling to Nashua Friday, Jan. 27, to take on the Porcupines, who currently sit in fourth place in the district with a 2-4 record. The girls tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m.
