The Porcupines boys basketball team dropped a conference game to the Lustre Christian Lions Jan. 19 in Nashua, falling 75-35. Nashua posted a 60-51 victory over non-conference team Richey/Lambert the following night on the road. Nashua shares the number-two spot in District 3C boys basketball with Scobey/Opheim. Both teams have a 4-2 record in conference play with Nashua posting an 8-4 overall record.
Nashua trailed 14-7 at the end of the first quarter against Lustre. The Lions threw up 23 in the second while holding the Porcupines to 6 points for a 37-13 Lustre lead at the half. Nashua put up 10 in the quarter following intermission but Lustre added another 18 to the visitors' side of the scoreboard. The Porcupines were outscored 20-12 in the final frame.
Grady Nielsen powered the home team with 14 points, hitting 5-of-11 free throws and a three-pointer. Xander Pugh connected for 9 points with two shots from downtown and 3-for-8 shooting at the line. Damon Adkins hit for 5 with a trey and Kevan Viste added another 5 with a 1-for-4 showing on bonus shots. Caden Laumeyer added a bucket.
Lustre Christian racked up 20 fouls, eight in the second half, while Nashua held theirs to 10, six in the last two quarters. Laumeyer was called for four and Nielsen had three fouls. Adkins, Pugh and Bubba Pugh drew a whistle each.
On the road the following night, Nashua found more offensive prowess, putting up double digits in all four quarters. The Porcupines took a 21-15 lead after one, and held a one-point lead at the half, 32-21. They outscored their hosts 14-8 in the third and 14-12 in the final quarter.
Leading Nashua was X. Pugh, who put up 23 points. He hit two from downtown and went 5-for-7 at the free throw line. Nielsen added 18 with a 5-for-5 showing at the line. Adkins added 5 with a free throw while B. Pugh and Laumeyer both hit 3-of-4 free throws on their way to 5 points a piece. Viste hit two from the floor for 4 points.
Nashua was called for 13 fouls, five in the second half, while their hosts had 18 infractions, 12 in the second half. Adkins fouled out and Laumeyer drew three calls. Viste and Nielsen had two fouls each and B. Pugh had one.
Nielsen pulled down seven rebounds, three offensive, while Viste and Laumeyer had six boards, one offensive, each. X. Pugh had five rebounds, Adkins four and B. Pugh three.
Viste led the Porcupines in assists with nine, with no turnovers and three steals. X. Pugh had two assists, two giveaways and four steals. Adkins, Nielsen and Laumeyer had one assist each. Nielsen had two turnovers and one steal as well as the team's only block. Adkins added a steal to the stats sheet. Laumeyer had one turnover. B. Pugh had two steals.
Nashua hosts North Country Friday, Jan. 27. Girls JV will play a half game at 4 p.m. followed by a boys JV half-game at 5 p.m. Girls varsity tips off at 6 p.m. with the 7:30 p.m. boys varsity game concluding the evening. The Porcupines travel to Dodson Saturday, Jan. 28. The JV boys will tip off at 3 p.m. The varsity girls play at 4:30 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. varsity boys game.
