Scottie Boys Wrestling Ranked Sixth, Girls Continue to Shine

The Glasgow boys wrestling team maintained their sixth place ranking in the Class B/C Wrestling Coaches Power Poll released Jan. 10. Glasgow sits behind defending state champions Huntley Project in first; Three Forks, second; Jefferson, third; Cut Bank, fourth, and Whitehall, fifth. Coming in behind Glasgow were Colstrip in seventh; Anaconda, eighth; Plains/Hot Springs, ninth, and Lincoln County, tenth.

Earning individual were rankings were Khye Gamas, William Kirkland, Michael King, Mason Donaldson and Mo Fast. Gamas sits in third at 138 lbs. while Kirkland, at 145, is ranked sixth. King is also in sixth at 160 lbs., as is Donaldson in the 170 lbs. class. Fast earned a fourth place ranking at 285 lbs.

The Scotties hosted the Class A defending state champions, the Sidney Eagles, Jan. 10 for a dual under the lights. None of the Glasgow girls team was able to get in a match due to a disparity in weight classes with Sidney, but the boys' event featured several highlights.

In the varsity dual, three Scotties earned wins as Sidney won the dual 51-18. Andrew Leslie, Donaldson and Ethan Nickels earned wins, all via fall. Leslie took his win in 1:16 in the 126 lbs. class. At 170 lbs., Donaldson won in 0:23 while Nickels took down his opponent at 205 lbs. in 1:05.

Glasgow fared far better in JV action following the varsity dual, taking that event by a 34-9 score.

Cody Kuka, Ted See, Cash Richardson, Jack Cornwell, Kirkland and Rhett Eklund all posted wins for the Scotties.

Kuka, who as an eighth-grader, took on the most matches of any grappler on the day. He lost his varsity match-up at 103 to Gordon Knapp, a two-time state finalist, but rebounded with two wins in the JV match. He won a major decision, 12-0, and a decision, 8-3.

See, at 120, won by fall in 1:12. Richardson took down his opponent in 2:43 for a win at 126 lbs. Cornwell and Kirkland, both at 145, won by fall: Cornwell in 1:59 and Kirkland in 1:33. Eklund won a 7-4 decision at 160 lbs.

Both Scottie teams hit the road Friday and Saturday for yet another tough tournament in Miles City. The Glasgow boys finished the 64th Annual Cowboy Invitational in 21st place with 49.5 team points. In girls action, Glasgow took 15th place with 29 team points on Day 1 of the 2nd Annual Cowgirl Invitational and finished in 20th place on Day 2 with 12 team points.

On Day 1 of the Cowgirl, Avery Pedersen took second place at 126 lbs. and Madison Lamb finished in third at 145 lbs. Lamb came in fifth on Day 2 of the event.

On the boys mats, Kuka, Gamas, Kirkland, Cornwell and Nickels advanced to the consolation round. Gamas was the only individual place winner for the Glasgow boys, finishing in third place at 138 lbs. He left the Cowboy Invitational with a 6-1 record.

With under a month before the state tournament in Billings, the Scotties have another grappling-filled week. They attended the Poplar Mixer Jan. 17 but results were unavailable at press time. Glasgow is scheduled for the Chinook Mixer Friday, Jan. 20, and the Harlem Invitational Saturday, Jan. 21.

Glasgow hosts Class A Glendive Tuesday, Jan. 24 for Senior Night, scheduled for 6 p.m. in Scottie Gymnasium.
