Nashua Boys Win Two in Conference Play

Nashua’s boys basketball team picked up two conference wins this past week, improving their record to 3-1, 6-3 overall. The Porcupines defeated Dodson at home Jan. 10 by a 56-39 margin and left Scobey with a narrow 46-44 victory Jan. 13.

Nashua hit double digits in every quarter against Dodson, outscoring the visiting Coyotes 14-10 in the first and 14-8 in the second for a 28-18 lead at the half. The Porcupines kept up the offensive pressure in the second with 18 in the third and 10 in the fourth while holding Dodson to 14 and 7 in the same frames.

Grady Nielsen powered the Porcupines with 21 points, including a 5-for-7 showing at the free throw line. Damon Adkins put up 14 points with 70 percent shooting from the court followed by Kevan Viste with 11 with 3-for-5 shooting at the line. Xander Pugh added 5 with a free throw, Caden Laumeyer 3 with a free throw and Bubba Pugh scored a basket.

Nashua held their fouls to 11, eight in the second half, while Dodson drew 14 whistles, four in the second half.

Laumeyer had four fouls while Viste was called for three. Nielsen had two infractions with Adkins and X. Pugh drawing a foul each.

X. Pugh led in assists with eight followed by Viste with four and Adkins with three. Nielsen and Laumeyer had one each. X. Pugh also led in steals with four, alongside three turnovers. Viste had three steals with two turnovers. Adkins and Nielsen both added a steal with Adkins notching six turnovers and Nielsen three.

Nielsen dominated the boards with 16 rebounds, six offensive. Adkins pulled down eight boards, four at each end of the court while X. Pugh and Viste grabbed seven rebounds each. Laumeyer had five boards.

Nashua faced a much tighter game Friday in Scobey. The teams were knotted at 14 after the first eight minutes with Scobey pulling ahead 28-24 by the half. The Porcupines took the lead with a 15-point showing in the third, while holding the Spartans to 7 points.

Laumeyer led the team with 13 points, including 3-for-6 shooting at the charity stripe. Captains X. Pugh and Viste added 10 points each. X. Pugh hit two three-pointers and 2-of-2 at the line while Viste went 4-for-4 on bonus shots. Adkins connected for 7 with a free throw and Nielsen added 6 points.

Scobey was called for 17 infractions, 10 in the second half, while Nashua had 11 fouls, seven in the second half. Nielsen drew four whistles while Adkins and Laumeyer drew three and Viste had one foul.

Nielsen and X. Pugh led in assists with three each while Adkins, Viste and Laumeyer had two helpers a piece. Viste and Nielsen added two steals each with Viste turning the ball over four times and Nielsen three. X. Pugh had one steal with seven turnovers. Adkins had eight turnovers.

Nelsen led in rebounds with 10, two offensive, followed by Laumeyer with seven, two offensive as well. Viste grabbed five boards, Adkins four and X. Pugh three.

Nashua hosts Lustre Christian Thursday, Jan. 19. A girls JV half-game kicks off the evening at 4 p.m., followed by a boys JV half-game at 5 p.m. The varsity girls tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys varsity concluding the night with a 7:30 p.m. game. The Porcupines travel to Lambert Friday, Jan. 20, for a boys JV half-game at 5 p.m. followed by the girls varsity at 6 p.m. and boys varsity at 7:30 p.m.
