NC Boys Drop Two

The Mavericks boys basketball team dropped both their games this past week. North Country lost a non-conference game to Glasgow in Saco Thursday by a 70-32 score. They lost 46-34 to the Spartans in Scobey Saturday night, giving them a 1-2 conference record, 2-7 overall.

North Country trailed the Class B Scotties 20-10 at the end of the first quarter in Saco and saw Glasgow’s lead increase to 21 points by the half, 38-17. The Scotties put up 16 points in the third and fourth quarters while holding the Mavericks to 10 and 5 in the same frames.

Blaine Downing led North Country with 18 points, including three from downtown and 5-for-8 shooting at the free throw line. Kade Strommen scored 6 and Coy Bowman hit for 5 with a trey. Jake Brown added a three-pointer.

Glasgow had 16 fouls while North Country held theirs to 10, four in the second half. Downing was called for four while Bowman and Strommen drew two whistles each. Brown and Laytin Erickson had one foul each.

The Mavericks JV team fell by a single point in a half game, 21-20, against the Scotties.

Austin Hanley led the team with 11 points, hitting three from beyond the arc. Brown hit two treys and a field goal for 8 points while Jaydeen Hanshew added a free throw.

North Country came closer in their game against Scobey, losing by a 12-point margin. The Mavericks trailed 12-6 at the end of the first but they put up 12 points in the second quarter while the Spartans scored 13. Scobey led 34-25 at the end of the third and outscored North Country 12-9 in the final eight minutes.

Downing and Bowman both put up 13 points in the win. Downing went 3-for-6 at the line while Bowman hit 2-of-4 free throws with three downtown shots. Strommen had two field goals while Brown and Andrew Boucher added a bucket each.

Scobey had 16 infractions in the game while North Country had 18 fouls, split evenly between the halves.

Downing fouled out of the game. Strommen and Kenan LaBrie had four fouls each. Bowman had three fouls and Erickson drew two whistles.

The Mavericks host the Lustre Christian Lions in Saco Friday, Jan. 13. Girls JV will play at 4 followed by the boys JV at 5 p.m., both half games. Varsity girls tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys varsity game at 7:30 p.m. North Country travels to Frazer Saturday, Jan. 14, to take on the Bearcubs for a girls varsity game at 6 p.m. and a boys varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
