Dawgs Rock On Defeat Copper City Kings At Home

The high school Ice Dawgs downed the Copper City Kings in a pair of home games to close out 2022. Glasgow beat Butte 4-3 Friday night before returning to the ice Saturday morning for a 4-1 victory.

Glasgow took a 2-0 lead after one period Friday night, demonstrating excellent puck control that would factor into both wins. The Dawgs wasted little time in converting on their possession, lighting up the scoreboard just 1:43 into play. Captain Michael Hoyer netted the even strength goal for Glasgow. He added a power play goal – on the only penalty called in the first period – just over three minutes later.

The Dawgs started the second period just as strong but Butte fought back, finding the back of the net for the first time with 11:32 left on the clock. The goal plus Glasgow penalties marked a momentum shift as the Kings added a power play goal followed by an even strength goal prior to the intermission, giving the visitors a 3-2 lead.

Glasgow returned to the ice after the break with focus. Bode Barnett tied the game with 11:47 remaining with assists from Tatum Hansen and Hoyer. With 2:36 left on the clock, Barnett put the game winning goal in net on a power play.

The Dawgs were 2-for-6 on power plays while holding Butte to one on their six chances. The Kings had 12 minutes on their penalties while the Dawgs racked up 22 minutes on seven infractions.

Peyton Hubbard served two minutes in the second for hooking. Lex Fairclough was called for a 2-and-10 on unsportsmanlike conduct, also in the second. Barnett and Trevor Dulaney both drew tripping penalties before the intermission. Tavin Boland and Mason Hunter each took an involuntary seat in the third period for interference.

Glasgow outshot Butte by a 39-22 margin. Glasgow goalie Aidin Wilkowski turned in an 86.4 save percentage in the win.

The Dawgs and the Kings returned to the ice Saturday morning where Glasgow again took the lead in the opening period. Barnett found the back of the net with an assist from Dulaney with 9:14 on the clock. Tristan Powell made it 2-0 just 2:10 into the second with help from Barnett and Hansen.

Butte cut Glasgow's lead in half just 22 seconds into the final period but Hubbard netted an insurance goal short-handed with help from Boland and Barnett 38 seconds later.

Dulaney found the back of the net on a power play with an assist from Charlie Cornwell with 12:55 left in the game. The goal would stand as the final one of the game but the action was far from over as both teams kept the officials and penalty box workers busy.

The Kings once again had 12 minutes on six infractions while Glasgow served 35 minutes on 12 penalties.

Boland, slashing; Zevin Kummerfeldt, interference; Hubbard, interference, and Connor Koski, cross-checking, all sat for two minutes in the second period.

Hansen was called for interference, 2 minutes; head contact, 5 minute major; and head contact, 10 minute game misconduct in the second. Glasgow was also called for a bench minor penalty. Koski, unsportsmanlike conduct; Mason Hunter, interference; Kummerfeldt, roughing, and Powell, roughing, drew whistles also in the third period.

Glasgow went 1-for-5 on the power play while denying Butte all nine of their man advantages.

Jacob Potter, in net for the Dawgs, turned away 12 of the 13 attempts on his net, giving him a 92.3 save percentage. Glasgow put 48 pucks on Butte's net, standing the Kings' goalie on her head.

Glasgow hosts Bozeman this weekend. The Ice Dawgs take on the visiting Ice Dogs Friday, Jan. 6, at 8 p.m., following the Glasgow-Miles City Bantam game at 6 p.m. The Dawg-Dog fight continues Saturday, Jan. 7, at 10 a.m., followed by the Bantams v. Miles City at noon.
